Both my partner and I are Kadampa Buddhists and so chose Ulverston to visit as the Buddhist Centre, Manjushri has a special place in our hearts. Not only did we need somewhere nearby but we needed a place that would accept dogs and that was cosy and welcoming to stay. Shirley's cottage now also has a special place in our hearts it is clean, cosy, and the perfect location for our stay. We'd definitely choose to stay there again and may look into it for 2023. Thank you for the attention to detail. 10/10

Hawthorn cottage is a delightful find in a great town for visiting the Lake District. Its location is amazing. Less than 500 yards from the market cross in the middle of town, yet the views and sense of peace from the garden are truly rural. The cottage is very well equipped, with all the mod cons you could want, including very good wifi. The bathroom has a fab shower and awesome bath. Its very nicely finished. The same applies to a really spacious bedroom with a comfortable bed and good quality linen. Vicky and family (who live next door) provide a really good welcome. They genuinely are nice folk who are interested in making sure your visit is a good one. ..... and the weather was great. 'nuff said? You'll have a wonderful time here.

A comfortable home from home with everything that you could want as a base to explore the Lake District.

Beautiful cottage, great people and a beautiful area. Everywhere was so quiet and clean. Plenty to do and see and fabulous walks for the dog. The bathroom was something from a 5 star hotel and the whole place was so well equipped, clean and comfy.

Rated by Mrs Stonier reviewed on 5th July 2016

Hawthorn Cottage was in a perfect location for nearby walks for the dog, from the doorstep. It had a perfect sized garden for a medium sized dog. The cottage had exceptional facilities; a fabulous double bath and amazing power shower, constantly supplying hot water. The log burner in the front room was perfect and nothing was missed. My partner particularly liked the addition of a dishwasher, allowing him to 'relax' a little more on holiday! The host was very friendly, helpful and only next door if we had any queries.

Everything was great! Hawthorn Cottage was ideal and just perfect for a quiet, cozy, weekend getaway. It is near to some nice attractions but, to be honest, I didn't really want to go very far. I did venture to Coniston and to the nearby Conishead Priory meditation centre, both of which had some nice spots for walking the dog.Tastefully decorated with comfortable furnishings appropriate to the character of the house. There is a pleasant view across Ulverston from the back garden. Curling up with a book, with a fire in the wood burner, was just perfect. The cottage is right by the road but it is not busy so it was nice and quiet, with mostly just birdsong audible.

We used to live in this town, in a similar cottage, and this made us feel as if we had come home. It is just lovely, so warm and cosy and perfectly situated. A real gem. Attention to detail is spot on, cleanliness is immaculate, and the hosts are as thoughtful and caring as can be. We loved this place and will stay here next time we are in town.

Hawthorn Cottage was excellent. It had everything you could want and more. The cottage was immaculate, had a very comfortable bed and was situated in a great location. The owners of the cottage couldn't have been more helpful. We will definitely be returning .

We actually stayed at this cottage THREE separate times in 2015 as we are conducting extensive research prior to moving to the Furness area. Having previously stayed in other self catering properties and most of the hotels in Ulverston we know quite a lot about the competition. Hawthorn Cottage met and exceeded our expectations. It is close to the town centre but without the parking and noise issues. Vicki who manages the property and lives nearby has been very helpful and showed a genuine interest in our property search.

The cottage was perfect! It was extremely comfortable and a perfect walking distance to the town centre. The owner was wonderful; a good representative of the warm and kind people of Ulverston, she made sure we were well taken care of.

It was tastefully furnished and deceptively spacious, very cosy and spotlessly clean. The location was ideal - a couple of minutes walk into Ulverston town with pubs, tea shops, shops, and yet the cottage was quiet with minimal traffic on the road, and there was a pleasant outlook from the rear of the property.

Rated by Mrs Clarke reviewed on 6th January 2016

This cottage was stunning! Couldn't fault anything! Had a gorgeous log burner, and a quaint, cosy feel to the cottage! It was close to the town centre with all essentials on your doorstep and had easy access to South Lakes for long walks. Couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. We will definitely be returning. Thanks.

An absolute delight! Fantastic spacious cottage with a lovely little garden. Lots of unexpected extras like fresh flowers, milk, coffee, sugar, tea etc upon arrival. Really welcoming. The cottage was very well equipped too. There was also a really helpful box of tourist information which provided some great ideas for walks and trips around the area. We had a dog with us so really good walk suggestions for guests. The town itself with shops and pubs literally a minutes walk away so great location. Would definitely recommend this cottage.

A very comfortable and charming cottage perfectly sited just outside of Ulverston town centre. It was very clean and tidy with a very welcoming owner too. There was a big comfortable bed and huge bath in the bathroom. Ulverston is a great town with lots to do, see and enjoy within walking distance of this super cottage.

Really loved this special little cottage. The owner and neighbour were really helpful - nothing was too much trouble. It was a great place from which to explore the Lake District.

Rated by Miss Sharp reviewed on 6th June 2015

Beautiful old cottage with traditional latched doors and a wood burning stove. Kitchen is modern and well-equipped - this is not one of those "self-catering" places where you discover too late that there's no corkscrew or egg cups. Dogs are welcome in downstairs area. There is an enclosed rear garden with views over the slate roofs of the little town to the hills beyond. A minute up the road and you are in open country with footpaths for dog-walking. Five minutes down the road is the market square with shops, pubs and restaurants.

This is a lovely cottage, perfect for a couple, with everything provided that you could possibly need or want. The lady who looks after the cottage was wonderful and did everything she could to ensure we had a great stay.

Rated by Ms Goodhind reviewed on 25th April 2015

Hawthorn cottage is described as a romantic retreat and on first impressions it appears to be the case that the description is pretty accurate. A clean and comfortable cottage in the town of Ulverston is potentially a great base from which to explore the Lakes without having the crowded feel of the National Park. We had planned to stay for a week but after 3 days the continual use of a JCB by the neighbours proved intolerable. Furthermore, the building site across the road which had closed when we arrived on Good Friday was poised to burst into action on Tuesday. We tried to contact the owner but did not get a reply and it transpired that the troublesome neighbours were her family anyway, so we cut our losses and left after 3 days. Sykes were helpful and this may be a good place to stay when all the building is completed but at the moment we could not recommend.

We loved Hawthorn Cottage. It was a characterful place with excellent furnishings and décor, as well as a wood burning stove. Ideal place for a short stroll into the fascinating town of Ulverston. The owner was friendly and helpful. There's a small garden and views from some windows too.

We loved our stay at Hawthorn Cottage. The location was perfect; only a 2 minute walk from the marketplace and convenience stores, and 7 minutes from the train station from where you can explore Barrow, the Cumbrian Coast, and further afield as far as Lancaster, Preston and Carlisle. The cottage was newly renovated and the perfect size for a romantic and peaceful break away. It was small enough to feel cosy while big enough for you both to escape each other for a couple of hours! The cottage had all the essentials you'd need. The log fire simply topped it off as well as the friendly neighbours and the garden wildlife! We were very happy with our rural retreat!
