Reviews

As with the previous reviews, this accommodation and the hosts were great. From the quality of the accommodation, its cleanliness and the chocolate cake on arrival. A real home from home, we found nothing wanting when preparing diner, from bottle open to carving knife. We were a group of two couples and the location is ideal for many of the sites and places to visit in North Wales. For leisurely cycling we popped into town, (10 mins downhill walk), and hired bikes for a 9 miles cycle out to Barmouth on the flat Estuary trail. For diner we again walked down hill to town but you might want to think twice about the second helping of dessert before the up hill walk back.

We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cottage, it is beautifully and tastefully furnished and spotlessly clean. The kitchen is large and very well-equipped. There are spectacular mountain views from the lounge, bedrooms and patio.

Stayed at this house for a week with 2 friends on a fishing trip. Great start being welcomed with a greeting card and some lovely cakes ! The accommodation was just as described and spotlessly clean and tidy, all the equipment worked a treat and the beds were all very comfortable. One double bedroom has a good en-suite and the other two bedrooms can share the larger bathroom. We didn't enjoy the best of weather on our trip and we were soaked on all but one day...thankfully there was a good utility room downstairs which was entirely suitable for drying our gear ready for the next day. Always a good sign when my friends intend to go back with their wives !

The cottage was of a very high standard with tasteful décor and furnishings and everything provided for. We especially appreciated the books of local walks. The area was delightful with beautiful scenery, excellent walking, two good restaurants and a good pub.

Beautiful cottage in lovely surroundings. There is everything you need and more in the cottage. The beds were excellent as was the cleanliness of the cottage. We could find no fault with it!

An extremely clean, well equipped Cottage and a wonderful welcome. This Cottage is set in an amazing location with fantastic views.

This was our 2nd visit to this lovely cottage. The cottage is well stocked with everything required; crockery, cutlery, plus information leaflets to help plan your days out in this lovely part of the country. This is the best holiday cottage we have visited in 15 years, hence why we returned, and is a credit to the owners, to whom we say "thanks again for a brilliant week."

Our holiday was excellent, it is a perfect holiday home in a stunning location.

Rated by Mr Travers reviewed on 12th April 2015

We would strongly recommend staying here. The house feels like home, immaculate, spacious, lots of utensils for cooking, TV, games, books, lots of local guides and suggestions, incredible views of Cader Idris mountain. Upon arrival there was a beer, bottle of wine, milk, tea, coffee, Welsh cakes and a cake for us. Excellent location - close to the Eurospar which has a really good selection of ingredients for cooking. Close to the centre of Dolgellau so you can easily walk into town for a night out. The local area is full of things to do from bike riding, hiking, good restaurants, castles, waterfalls, gold mines and much more.

Plenty of information: brochures, maps, eating recommendations provided. Access to the property was fine for us - but would be difficult for a disabled person.

One of the best properties we have stayed at, it felt like home and we felt sad leaving such a lovely house. The property was excellent and cannot be faulted and the welcome pack left for us was very much appreciated. The owners have done a lovely job with the house, would go back soon.

An excellent property and location. If we were the sort of people to return to the same place in future years, this would be it.

Rated by Mr Bratley reviewed on 26th August 2013

We visited the cottage as two elderly couples and were very pleased with the spacious rooms. We also were very happy with the two bathrooms, one for each couple. The ladies were very excited about the well equiped kitchen and all the accessoires in it. They like to cook and bake all kind of stuff and they have done their very best. The town centre is a few minutes away by car, but you also can walk to the centre; it is about 15 - 20 minutes. The return from the town centre is a bit harder as you must walk up along a hill, but for those who like to walk it is very well to do, especially if you did have your diner in town and you had a few drinks or glases of wine accompanying your meal. If it is a bit sunny, the terrace invites you to sit down and enjoy the surroundings with a nice drink at hand and a very well view at Cader Idris. An excellent place for exploring the North-West area of Wales.

Fabulous accommodation with quality furniture and bedding etc. Very comfortable beds. Excellent showers - hot and powerful ! Everything you could possibly need was provided. Lovely welcome pack from the owners Mr & Mrs Lewis, with sponge cake and Welsh cakes to go with a cuppa after a long journey. There were also fresh flowers which were a lovely touch. The one disappointment was that we booked this particular accommodation because the Sykes website said that access was "via 5 steps to the front door, or level access at the back". Unfortunately this wasn't the case, as you can't drive your car all the way up the quite steep slope to the back door access as it is too narrow. You have to park the car in front of the property at the bottom of the slope. You then have to walk up the slope which is at least as steep as a flight of stairs to even reach the steps which lead to the front entrance. This meant that my parents, in their late 80's with mobility problems, had to struggle up and down the steep (especially to them) slope and climb up the five steps to the front door. As there is no hand rail, we had to assist them every time. What a pity that the slope can't be widened to let the car go all the way to the top level (back door). If we had brought the wheelchair with us, it would have been almost impossible to use. I can't help thinking this issue could easily be solved and would be a Godsend to any others who book this property thinking it was suitable for wobbly elderly or disabled relatives !

Llety'r Bugail is a fantastic property set right on the uplands above Dolgellau, with fabulous views over Cadair Idris and the mountain ranges. It was beautifully clean, well equipped and, more than anything else, dry! The North Welsh weather let us down for the first time ever, but since this was about our 40th trip, it is hardly indicative of what one can normally expect. The area was beautifully quiet, with few but very friendly neighbours, and there was enough wildlife to keep the most ardent of naturalists quiet for a goodly while. As a result of little or no light pollution, particularly late at night, the night skies were absolutely outstanding, and the provision of patio furniture enhanced the experience. There are plenty of shops nearby to assuage the hunger of all but the greediest of tourists, and the cottage is a great centre for exploring all of Gwynedd and beyond. We had a superb week, and greatly enjoyed what was provided. As an added bonus, the blackberry bushes were in full fruit, so the resultant pies/crumbles were a joy to behold, and something that the supermarket didn't supply. (Mind you, they did provide the custard!) All round, an excellent place to get away from the lunatic world we all live in, and recharge the addled brain.

Lovely Cottage on the edge of Dolgellau. Cottage well looked after and extremely well maintained - one of the best we've ever stayed in. All mod cons in a great setting with mountains right on the doorstep. Lots of places to visit locally and plently to do for families. Welcome tray on arrival had excellent cake!

Very spacious, modern, well maintained, well equipped, immaculately clean property with great bathrooms. The outdoor key safe a great idea for allowing people to go out and come back at different times.

Rated by Ms Severne reviewed on 14th October 2012

Just spent a week at the property with two friends. From the moment we arrived we loved it and couldn't fault anything. It is a modern extremely spacious property and as three friends on a walking holiday it was great to have a bedroom each with plenty of space for all our gear. The two bathrooms, one being ensuite was also a big bonus. It has a lovely large kitchen diner with everything you could want to cater for yourself. The house was spotless clean and all the furnishing are in a good state of repair. Lovely to be greeted after a long journey with a freshly made Victoria Sponge cake, Welsh cakes, tea, milk, fresh flowers and a bottle of wine for later! The property has great views from the front balcony of the surrounding mountains and seems to catch the sun most of the day. The property is about half a mile from town so it is close enough to walk for most people but it is uphill on the way back, although this seemed worse in the car than when we actually walked it! The outdoor key safe which is a great idea as it meant we didn't have to all go out together or worry about who had the key as we knew the first person home would always be able to get in. As well as the property we stayed in there is a one bedroomed twin apartment on the lower ground floor with an interconnecting internal stairway, renting the two together would be ideal for a larger group of friends or multi generation family. Llety’r Bugail is one of the best holiday properties I have every stayed in and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Fabulously appointed house with incredible views. The house was amazingly well equipped, and we couldn't have wanted for anything. To be welcomed by a home-made sponge cake made us feel very welcome. Why this house isn't Five Star is beyond me.

Rated by Mrs Manton reviewed on 16th September 2012

We rented both properties for a family and friends holiday. They were both very well appointed and extremely clean. The view from the balcony and the quiet location more than made up for the long uphill walk after eating out (actually I'm lying, because one of my sons and I drove and didn't drink. The internal stairway was unlocked for us, making it easy to move between properties. The outside area under the balcony was ideal for tinkering with bikes, even in rainy weather. Talking of which, the only criticism was the lack of a tumble drier.

Excellent friendly service from Sykes Cottages. The home was easy to find and we loved the views from the front balcony. Everything inside was clean and modern and the layout was good. Although a short distance from the centre of the village, it was near a supermarket and garage. It was ideally situated for a walking and cycling holiday with the lovely trail along the Mawddach estuary nearby and the Coed-y-Brenin Forest within easy reach. I cannot really think of anything I disliked about it!
