Location Details

Situated on the Trotternish Peninsula in the north of Skye is the scattered village of Conista - formed from a few, traditionally whitewashed cottages. Ten miles from the village of Uig, and six from Staffin, Conista is well served by local amenities. It also boasts close proximity to Duntulm, named after a steep rocky headland where the ruins of Duntulm Castle can be seen. The entire island offers excellent walking routes, as does the nearby mainland - accessible by both road bridge and ferry - whilst the breathtaking scenery makes a wonderful backdrop for cycling trips, fishing and birdwatching, especially as many seabirds use the steep cliffs during the early summer, including the rare Fulmar.

From the lush green farmlands of the Borders to the ruggedness of the Highlands, the Scots are proud of their land and identity. Scotland also has some of Britain's best beaches with glorious stretches of clean sand over which to roam.

Reviews

A perfect retreat away from the hustle and bustle of life, Ridge End Cottage is immaculately clean and extremely welcoming. It really is a home from home set in stunning countryside and offers a great base from which to explore the Isle of Skye. We never return to places we've been before, as there is so much of the world to see; however, in this case we will be making an exception.

Rated by MJo44 reviewed on 7th December 2017

The cottage was well equipped with fantastic views from every window. We were lucky enough to have fantastic weather on Skye, and spent every day out walking and visiting the sights.

Rated by Miss Tomlinson reviewed on 15th May 2016

I loved the wilderness and the space offered in the Isle of Skye, I particularly enjoyed the views from the property which were so breath taking to wake up to. The property was so well maintained, it felt homely as soon as we arrived.

Rated by Mr Clougher reviewed on 4th September 2015

Amazing location and a very well equipped cottage with amazing views! A perfect place to forget about everything for a little while. The walks were stunning and the views breathtaking! Had a wonderful stay even though the weather was pretty horrible for most of the week.

Rated by Mrs Palmes reviewed on 12th June 2015

The property was wonderful. The view, especially from the mezzanine bedroom was stunning. The house was very cosy and had lots of hot water. My little two year old loved the stairs and the high chair. Would highly recommend the cottage and the location was excellent, especially for keen walkers and lovers of good coffee. The single track cafe is literally 2mins away with coffee and cake to die for.

Rated by Mrs Waldthausen reviewed on 27th May 2015

This was a fantastic break in a fantastic location, the cottage was an easy distance from lots of Skye's best views and walks. The best thing was coming in from a long windy walk and stoking up the log burner, thanks for a lovely stay. I would definitely return.

Rated by Mr Smith reviewed on 4th March 2015

The layout of the house is really great. On the mezzanine we could see the stars and the northern lights through the top windows which was a great experience. The location is breathtaking, the house is very well equipped and has some great features such as the power shower and the woodburner. Highly recommended

Rated by Mr Martin reviewed on 11th February 2015

I picked this cottage originally as it was near to the Quraing which is one of my favourite places on Skye. The cottage is really well fitted out. We used the top mezzanine which allowed us to see the northern lights from the top windows over the top of the island. There is a local shop a little drive away, but noting really else which means planning ahead and cooking at the cottage - the facilities are great for this so no issue! There are some great features of the cottage - the woodburner is really good and the power shower is superb after a long day on the hills. Overall, a great cottage in a very scenic location. Wish we'd stayed longer!!!

Stayed at Ridge End Cottage for 2 weeks in August 2014. The house is situated in the North of Skye on the Trotternish Peninsula, very rural but stunningly beautiful. The house comprises of 2 ground floor bedrooms (one a double, the other with 2 singles), a ground floor shower and toilet, and a through lounge / kitchen / diner. On the first floor is a mezzanine bedroom with a double bed and a child's cot. There is a dishwasher, a washing machine, good sized oven and fridge freezer, television with Sky and wi fi connection. Also in the lounge is a woodburner, ideal if the weather is cool or damp. The house was immaculately clean and tidy, and our bed linen and towels were changed after the first week. The views from this cottage were amazing, the Quiraing from the back of the house, the Isles of Lewis and Harris from the front and all around grren fields, hills and sheep. The house is wonderfully placed for walking - the Quiraing, the Old Man of Storr, the dinosaur beach at Staffin, Duntulm Castle to name just a few. It also has easy access to the Skye Museum of Island Life, the Museum at Staffin and the Flora MacDonald monument. All in all we spent a fantastic fortnight in Ridge End and the Isle of Skye. Would suggest that although the house can accommodate 6 people, 4 may be a more comfortable number, but apart from that thoroughly recommended! Should also mention that Lorraine who looks after the house lives just along the road, and she's lovlely!

This is a lovely cottage in a magical part of the world. A wonderful place to escape the clutter of everyday existence and truly live! Thanks for sharing a beautiful home!

Rated by Mrs Farquhar reviewed on 20th August 2014

The cottage was very remote, which is exactly what we wanted. The setting and views were superb. The cottage is very cosy, well decorated and furnished, and a real home from home. The Isle of Skye is beautiful with many activities and places to visit.

Rated by Mrs Penman reviewed on 11th May 2014

What we liked about the cottage - the remoteness, the sheep (and lambs), the log burner, wi-fi, Sky TV with Sky Plus, the dishwasher, the fact that it didn't allow pets or smoking, the proximity of the beach, the overall décor and the funky shower. The Isle of Skye itself is simply stunning and there is so much to do, but you have to be prepared to drive (the island is much bigger than we thought), however driving is actually a pleasure. There is so much to recommend but we particularly liked the Museum of Island Life, The Old Man of Storr and the Fairy Pools. Word of warning though - watch out for the grumpy old Crofter if you go to the Cave of Gold; grumpy but good value.

Ridge End Cottage is wonderfully located at the northern tip of the Trotternish Peninsula on Skye. Fifteen minutes into Staffin for light shopping, newspapers, and excellent Internet services at Columba 1400. 40 minutes into Portree. The interior of the cottage is clean and very comfortable and the neighbors around the cottage are exceptionally friendly and helpful. The only (very slight) downside was that the cottage was not as well-equipped as many that we have rented. But we had an excellent two weeks there and hope to be able to return.

Fantastic setting if you like it quiet with great views. The house is well insulated and warm, and not on a through road, so no traffic.

Rated by Mr Joyce reviewed on 26th August 2013

Rated by FredericSylvie reviewed on 10th August 2013

Home from home. Very comfortable and the owner promptly replaced the water pump when it failed. He was there till11.00 pm for which we were very grateful. Will certainly return. Had a great time as we were there for our daughter,s wedding. Thank you Peter for allowing us to use your lovely cottage.

Booking this holiday cottage was completed smoothly. The Cottage was all i saw in the on line images and more! The location is quiet with beautiful views especially from the dorma bedroom.Local people were welcoming and the shops and amenities were fine. I have too recommend the Little Teapot cafe in the local village the selection of Tea's from around the world and Home made cakes make this a must to enhance the whole relaxing experience of my stay on Skye.I will most certainly be returning to this cottage and area of stunning natural beauty!!

Getting away from things and relaxing. The scenery of Conista and the Trotternish was spectacular. There are some amazing walks close to the cottage. We really didn't want to leave at the end of our week away. Although the weather was a little unpredicatble it didn't stop us doing the things we had intended to do.

Rated by Mr Thomson reviewed on 25th November 2012

Recommended location to get away from it all. Extremely calm with great views. Access to Uig and Portree shops within 30mins. Well-presented cottage with all self-catering necessities for a family of four. Kids loved the wildlife, countryside, including basking sharks, otters, seals, dolphins all easily spotted within a week in summer. Hebrides clearly visible from upper bedroom.

Rated by Miss Zdanowicz reviewed on 28th July 2012

The cottage and the surroundings were beautiful. A lot of thought had gone into the needs of holidaymakers to ensure they have a good stay. Whilst we went in June I believe the cottage would be just as welcoming at any time of year. The wood-burner made it even more homely.

Rated by Mrs Thulborn reviewed on 25th July 2012

Nice, quiet and perfect location between the Quirang and Duntulm. A newly build cottage with all the comforts of home.

Rated by Mr Van Der Krieken reviewed on 26th February 2012

Loved the cottage, second year in a row and would recommend to anyone. Great relaxing break and had everything we required especially with the kids being there.

Rated by Mr Fox reviewed on 24th October 2011

It was an extremely well equipped cottage with high specifications. We especially enjoyed the wood burning stove and the beautiful upstairs bedroom. Local people were very helpful and nice. The cottage was a lovely place to come home to after a day's adventures in Skye.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 16th September 2011

The cottage was perfect in every way, we couldn't have asked for any better. The cottage is in an ideal location with lovely views out every window and inside the cottage is very modern and very cosy.

Rated by Miss Maxwell reviewed on 11th September 2011

We met some friends from Liverpool area here in the north of Skye. We didn't expect such a great location. And the "real"house is much better than the pictures on the homepage does show! But you should like remote areas! The next supermarket is far away - but what you get instead is a place of peace and tranquility. And overall the house is a good base for some beautiful hikes & places like the Old Man of Storr, the Quairing, coast & waterfalls! One negative thing: The combined living/dining-room was a bit too small for 4 adults & 1 child. Rating: We would definately come back!!

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 17th August 2011

Very comfortable and cosy cottage.

Rated by Miss Mchugh reviewed on 8th August 2011

Property was modern, bright and airy - lovely contemporary design yet homely and warm. Woodburning stove was cosy and there was also a good central heating system if needed.

Rated by Mrs Palmer reviewed on 28th July 2011

Thought the property was well kitted out. A super kitchen with gas cooker, fridge freezer, dish washer and washing machine. A bathroom with a great shower that has multiple heads. Lovely master bedroom with staircase which leads up to it. We particularly like the wood burning stove, which we had on most nights.

Rated by Mr Blair reviewed on 25th July 2011

We loved the initial impact as you walked into the living room. The cottage has been decorated to a very good standard. We liked that the owners provided DVDs and games to play. The weather was excellent and we were able to make use of the small patio area around the back.

Rated by Mrs Flynn reviewed on 18th July 2011

A warm and cosy cottage and incredible scenery. Even though the cottage is isolated, which we prefer, you could still easily travel to visit elsewhere. Enjoyed the close encounters on the road with the numerous sheep and inquisitive highland cattle. Were even lucky enough to see a sea eagle at close quarters on one of the boat trips from Portree.

Rated by Mrs Shuttleworth reviewed on 13th June 2011

Remote location with nice views. Nicely furnished. Nice walks around the area. Warm and cosy.

Rated by Mr Neary reviewed on 13th April 2011

Absolutely loved the cottage, it was very modern and clean. A great place to totally unwind! We had a great 3 nights enjoying the stunning scenery. The cottage is lovely and warm which was appreciated during our stay in March. On the down side we felt that it was not quite finished. There was only 2 of us so we had ample space but felt that 6 people would struggle with the amount of seating in the living area. The cottage also does not have hanging space - the bedrooms are big so why not at least one wardrobe? A couple more chairs, a wardrobe, some coat hooks in the porch and a few more finishing touches (Bedside light in twin room?) would make the cottage perfect. Also be warned that the info says that the local Flodigarry Hotel is approx 2 miles - it is actually over 3 miles! Not much difference if you drive there but quite a lot more if you walk there and back!

Rated by TomVal92 reviewed on 19th March 2011

The cottage was fantastic and the owner provided nice touches such as fresh flowers. Everything you needed was there including washing powder, dish washer tablets ect they had thought of everything!

Rated by Mr Brown reviewed on 7th February 2011

Superb location. Very high spec and very inviting with its log burner giving a cosy feel during the cold evenings. Used this as a base for walking each day. Superb coastal walks nearby and close to the high peaks too. Great place, highly recomend it and had three lovely bedrooms.

This was our second visit to Ridge End Cottage and was every bit as enjoyable as the first time we stayed. This really is an excellent holiday cottage which we can whole heartedly recommend to anyone looking for a top class property in the north of Skye. A real 'home from home' (in our case, better than home!).

Rated by Mr Murdoch reviewed on 16th November 2010

The house was a real 'home from home'. It was well equipped and suited us especially since we had 2 small children running about. It was an extremely relaxing break and the cottage was fantastic. I couldn't fault the accommodation or the spectacular scenery and to top it off the weather was fabulous as well! Would definitely go back.

Rated by Mr Fox reviewed on 19th October 2010

The cottage was everything we had hoped for. It was spotless on our arrival and created an instant good impression. The central heating was very effective and kept us cosy in all weathers. The owners were particularly helpful when we had occasion to contact them. All in all, the perfect holiday let - we hope to be back before too long.

Ridge End Cottage was delightful, very quiet, just what we wanted, a pleasure to stay there.

Rated by Mrs Leeds reviewed on 24th May 2010

The tranquility and peacefulness of the location of the cottage. This was our first time on the Isle of Skye and we had amazing weather with not a 'midgie' in site. The most amazing walk we did was to the top of the Old Man of Storr no visitor to the island should miss this! The cottage was much better than we expected it was like something from a magazine, very modern comfortable and clean with everything you need. As it was April it was lambing season with a new lamb appearing in the flock every morning, our 11 yr old daughter was amazed.

Rated by Mrs McGinniss reviewed on 27th April 2010

The service we received was fantastic. The cottage had everything you would want and more, three beautiful bedrooms, a modern bathroom and kitchen living room. The whole cottage was everything we wanted. After a day walking we would go back light the fire and enjoy an evening in or go out to a local hotel to eat. The location is fantastic if you want a quiet relaxed holiday in a beautiful location with dramatic landscapes. You do have to be prepared with your supplies but the cottage is well worth the effort. This cottage has been put together with thought and attention to detail and is well worth a visit.

Rated by A FlipKey verified reviewer reviewed on 2nd December 2009

The property was fantastic - so fantastic we want to go again next year. It was perfect, it really should have 5 tourist board stars. The cottage is really well set out, very very clean and all appliances top quality. The bed was comfortable. The fire was set up and ready to be lit which helped and the information pack was great. In truth the cottage was warm and cosy so you did not need the fire, we just enjoyed sitting in front of it! We had a great holiday in a fantastic location in a beautiful cottage. Thank you
