Location Details

Stocksbridge is a town on the north-east edge of the lovely Peak District, and offers a variety of places to eat and shop, as well as a host of footpaths and bridleways to explore. Afternoon strolls can be enjoyed beside the Langsett, Broomhead and Moorhall dams, and Holmfirth, featured in Last of the Summer Wine, is close by. The longer walks and good mountain biking of the National Park are a short drive away, and visitors may even take advantage of the proximity of the M1 to venture as far afield as Sheffield, Leeds or York.

The ultimate in "year-round" appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.

Reviews

I worked for British Steel down the fox valley in the 1970s so this was a bit of a nostalgia holiday. The cottage is in a lovely position with uninterrupted views overlooking the Langsett moors and Underbank reservoir . The lounge, bedroom and bathroom are all of a good size with 32" TVs in both the lounge and bedroom. The en suite bathroom has large shower cubicle plus good size bath and the water pressure is good and hot for showers and baths. Outside there is a pleasant seating area amidst a profusion of colourful plants with lovely views over the gardens and distant hills. Overall this is a we'll catered for cottage with everything a couple would need for a good holiday. The internet connection is a little hit and miss but we have yet to find a cottage in a rural area with good coverage. Terry, Meg and Willow ( the Welsh Springer). Formally of Barnsley now in retirement near Filey.

Who would go to Barnsley for a holiday? With accommodation like this, anyone might. The cottage was immaculate and comfortable, and the location a hidden gem. With a little internet research you can find lots of good walking in the neighborhood, through fields and woodland to open moor. In less than an hour's drive you can be in pretty much any tourist destination in the northern end of the Peak District, from Bakewell to Edale. This means you can have a national park vacation at a fraction of the cost of renting inside the Park. The cottage was ideal for us to attend a nearby wedding and make family visits in South Yorkshire as well as providing a cozy base for a country vacation.

We felt at home at Underbank Hall Cottage and did not want to leave. We could not find any fault with the cottage or surroundings. We look forward to returning in the future.

A splendid well appointed cottage in a really quiet location with excellent views.

Rated by Mr Ross reviewed on 21st May 2016

The property was maintained to the highest standard and set in beautiful gardens.

Rated by Mr Hartwell reviewed on 15th May 2016

We stayed here a few years ago in the winter and we were very comfortable. Our second stay in spring was just as good as the first. Outside was a riot of spring colour and was beautiful, plenty of pots and troughs and borders packed with plants. The scones, jam etc was a nice touch and we enjoyed them after a long journey. Though the cottage is small it has everything you need and is a great base to stay. It has comfortable furnishings and a nice big bed and shower cubicle. We parked the car for 3 days and walked the local area as there are many nearby which we managed despite the weather. The Stockbridge walking website has lots of walks that are printable with very good directions. Our only downside this time was the the internet was very erratic and not available a lot of the time but as we were there only 3 days it was not a major problem but we did report it before we left.

Beautiful scenery and gardens which we were free to explore. Underbank Hall Cottage was comfortable and peaceful. Friendly owner and pets, who were there if we needed them, but left us to our holiday.

We couldn't have been happier with our week at Underbank Hall Cottage. It has been finished to the highest standards and comes with everything you might need. The kitchen and bathroom are finished extremely well. The bathroom has a very deep soaker tub and a large separate shower unit with excellent water pressure. This really is a prime property and we will undoubtedly be back.

Rated by Mr Coles reviewed on 24th October 2015

My girlfriend and I needed a break from the London area and so booked a week at Underbank Hall Cottage from a Friday to a Friday. We drove up on the Friday night and only arrived at about midnight to find a beautiful stone cottage wonderfully appointed. There were fresh scones with butter and home-made jam and a tea tray laid out for us. We forwent those and cracked open a bottle of wine, turned on the electric 'wood-burning' stove and allowed the peacefulness to wash over us. The following day, after a night spent in a very comfortable bed, we got to explore the cottage. It has everything that one could want: fitted kitchen with fridge (and small freezer shelf), dishwasher, quality matching crockery, glasses and flatware, microwave, gas cooker, washer/dryer combo. All of this in a lovely downstairs room. Upstairs is a huge bedroom with armoire with real hangers and a fantastic bathroom with deep tub and a huge separate shower unit with great pressure. We met the owner who said we were younger than most of her guests (we are mid 40s) and she invited us to wander the grounds which are manicured and beautiful. The cottage is next to the main house but you wouldn't know it and we felt completely alone and peaceful. We really couldn't be happier with our choice. We visited Stocksbridge once and found it a bit dismal but Penistone is about 3 miles in the other direction and is a delightful village with a lovely bistro (with great vegetarian options) and a couple of nice pubs. Ye Olde Mustard Pot is also recommended. There was nothing not to like about this place. Very highly recommended.

This is one of the best holiday cottages we have stayed in. Although we went at the coldest time of the year the cottage was very warm. The furnishings, kitchen equipment and all facilities were to a very high standard and the tasteful, neutral décor made us feel immediately at home. Beautiful views and lovely walks - would highly recommend. Thank you for a wonderful much needed break.

I have just returned from a wonderful stay at Underbank Cottage. The cottage is situated in the beautiful grounds of Underbank Hall, which features a walled garden and woodland along with beautifully tended lawns and flowerbeds. The cottage is delightfully furnished and well equipped with everything you may need during your stay. Car parking is just a few yards away. The owners had even provided scones and jam and a vase of sweet peas for our arrival. The area is lovely with lots of stunning views and lots of reservoirs and countryside nearby providing scenic walks. I absolutely loved this cottage and will definitely be returning.

We had a wonderful week in this amazing cottage. Since previous reviews mentioned the cottage was right next to the hall, I did not expect the location to be this perfect. We were speechless when we entered the driveway, and the interiours did NOT dissappoint us. Well equipped kitchen, indeed best bed ever, perfect shower and those views... Highly recommended!

Rated by Birgit W reviewed on 4th July 2012

Owners very helpful and told me all about the history of the hall, very interesting. Cottage was very high standard and exceptionally comfortable. I've never slept in a better bed!!! Ideal for doggie people - lovely walks from doorstep and only a few mins drive to a lovely reservoir walk. Worth taking a trip to Ladybower and Castleton too. Beautful views from patio area. Although cottage is right next to hall this was not a problem at all. All windows overlook gardens and views.

Underbank Hall is exactly as represented. A perfectly equipped, peaceful holiday cottage that is very well maintained, clean and in a pretty garden setting. Owners might live next door but they are utterly unobtrusive. The price was very reasonable. Great for a romantic getaway with good heating, comfortable bed and furnishings.

Rated by Mr Eastop reviewed on 3rd May 2011

The cottage is a beautiful stone building that abuts the owners' residence. We met the owners on arrival and bumped into them a few days into our week long stay, so privacy wasn't an issue. The cottage more than met our expectations. It was very clean, well appointed and warm. Views were beautiful from all of the windows. TV and wifi reception were excellent. We were unable to enjoy the local walks due to family reasons but from what we could see they would be more than enough reason to come to Underbank. Lovely, we'll be back - from Australia!

Rated by Mr Eastop reviewed on 15th March 2011

The cleanliness of the cottage, location and cosiness was fantastic. The owners are friendly and welcoming and they let us use the private wood for our dogs. It was just perfect and we look forward to going again.

A fantastic relaxing week spent in a lovely cottage that was well decorated and well equiped for your every day needs. On arrival we was shocked to find the cottage was next door to the main house, but this in no way took away our privacy. The owners were so helpfull with local knowledge. The area there is so unspoilt with many beautiful walks and quiant pubs.
