Location Details

The village of Embleton can be found on Northumberland's Heritage Coastline, close to the magnificent ruin of Dunstanburgh Castle. Embleton has a fascinating history, which stretches back to pre-medieval times. During the Wars of the Roses, the village suffered frequent invasion attempts by the Scots, and much later, in the 19th century, it was famous for its whinstone quarry. To this day a curving whinstone ridge provides shelter from the east winds. The history of the parish is the focus of the new Heritage Trails Project, which has led to several walks being designed in and around Embleton. The village has several excellent pubs and a fine Norman church. As well as the Dunstanburgh ruin, there are many other local attractions to entice visitors. These include the gardens at Howick Hall and Alnwick Castle and Garden. Among the excellent golf courses in the vicinity is the Dunstanburgh Links Course.

Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian's Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.

Reviews

It can be daunting going on holiday with three small children but Cra-na-ge made it a pleasure. We wanted for nothing, the kitchen is far better equipped than my own! The cottage has a lovely feel and is clean without being fussy, (if you have children you know what I mean). A large garden and a brilliant park nearby, lots to keep 3 boys happy. The beach is a half hour walk with toddlers and fairly easy to navigate with a pushchair. Castles galore!!! Fantastic places to visit all close by. We had a nice surprise the other day, two parcels arrived addressed to the two older boys from Harry Hedgehog, Craig is very thoughtful, it's the little things that make all the difference. We can't wait to return and pick up where we left off, lots more to see and do. We loved it!!

A cosy and well equipped cottage where we were met by the owner who explained all that we needed to know about the property in a friendly and welcoming manner. The location just suited us as we have a young child who loves time on the beach as well as visiting historic sites.

The cottage was homely and very well stocked. I have 3 small boys and they enjoyed hunting around for things in the cupboards and found plenty to do whilst we were in the cottage. Bored children are not happy, my children were entertained!

The location was ideal with plenty of new activities and amazing countryside. We felt the property deserved a higher grading than two stars.

The owner met us on arrival and was very welcoming. We found the house well stocked, spacious and very clean and it was easy for us to feel at home straight away. The location is very quiet and the garden is excellent. Embleton and the beach are lovely and easily reached - we happily let our 10 year old go off to buy milk from the local shop. Great accommodation in a lovely part of Northumberland.

A great welcome from the property owner. Super accommodation for 6 - plenty of space and good value. A very well equipped kitchen - the best I've seen yet! There was lots to do locally and the beach was on the doorstep!

Rated by Mr & Mrs Porteous reviewed on 29th April 2011

Excellent location for beaches and castles of Northumberland. Embleton beach was unspoilt with stunning views. A brisk 20minute walk from the cottage although we tended to drive as there was always ample parking and saved those little legs after a hard days play on the beach. The owner spared no effort in making us feel welcome, the cottage was well presented and equipped. The kids enjoyed the hedgehog hunt in the garden! Would highly recommend.

Rated by Mr Taylor reviewed on 19th September 2010

Very good for touring the area. Excellent range of kitchen equipment.

Rated by Mr Martin reviewed on 18th September 2010

Firstly, thjis is not a "beach cottage'! It is a full sized house, very well appointed and equipped for self catering. The neighbourhood is particularly quiet, a point noted by our visitors. We were met by the owner at the appointed time, and given a full review of all the facilities and equipment and contacts in case of problems. (There were none ). He also had a stock of brochures on points of interest in the area. The location is in Embleton village, which has a good small store, petrol station and four pubs, which serve good meals. The house is about 20 minutes walk from the beach and golf course. The beaches are wide, clean and make for good walking and children's playgrounds. There are other small and interesting villages within walking distance, and larger towns with good shopping within a twenty mile radius. Alnwick, the county town is particularly worth a visit.

Rated by Mrs Bryan reviewed on 6th June 2010

The service from both Sykes, and the owner were v.good.Directions spot on.Key holder helpful. House quirky at first sighting, but good parking in quiet cul-de-sac,garden good for kids(secure),layout of house a bit odd,but clean and comfy.Only problem with house was the clutter,we moved unnecessary bits and pieces into dining room, for the duration of stay. The kitchen draws were full of utensils...too many...i.e. 5 potato mashers!! plus numerous odds & sods surplus to requirements.Just needed a good throw out of STUFF! Bearing in mind we are farmers, used to mess and lots of STUFF!! The TV didn't work after day 2, but had decent weather,so not too worried.Easy 10 mins. cycle or drive/pleasant walk to spectacular beach. We took bikes and cycled along beach, adults could enjoy walk/cycle to Newton(?right name?)Handy car park 500m from sea.Lovley dune path to Dunstanburgh Castle,my girls 4&6 loved the holiday Three good pubs to eat in,v.posh foodie restraunt The Sportsman, better enjoyed by adults, but happy to accom. our well behaved kids. Good overall base for our decent priced family hol.

Embleton itself is a lovely place, a mile or so from glorious beaches which the children in our group thoroughly enjoyed. The cottage was extemely well equipped and it was obvious that the owner had taken a lot of trouble to respond to the views of guests. The only problem really is that the cottage is on a housing estate, so it is bit strange for a holiday. And we had some problems with 2 local very young children, who wandered into the garden, took away toys on one occasion and wanted us to play with them. They were only aged about 2 and 4 so it was of concern tha thy appeared to be neglected. We did leave a note for the owner about it.

Rated by Mrs Lutkin reviewed on 19th September 2007

Excellent location. Cottage was very well equipped and owner had gone to a lot of trouble to provide good facilities. Plenty of rainy day activities for both adults and children. Cottage in quiet cul-de-sac, no traffic, ideal for young children. Embleton beach nearby is fantastic and there are good pubs, castles, and eateries nearby. Weather good and some spectacular coastline with more than enough to do in a week. Wish we could have stayed longer. Ideal place for young children, walkers and dog owners.
