A quaint suburb and ward of Barrow-in-Furness, Roose, sometimes known as Roosecote, makes a marvellous base for those seeking a rural retreat to Cumbria. With the word 'roose' being Celtic for "moor" or "heath", you can expect to find plentiful spots for observing natural wonders and nature here. Encompassed by Rampside and Stank, as well as Piel Island and Roa Island, there's so much to explore within the local area and beyond. The area itself is home to a selection of pubs and shops, tending to all tastes as well as being wonderful for any self-catered stay, as well as being served by the Roose railway station, one of the few remaining stations on the Furness Line in the Barrow area. The nearby town of Barrow-in-Furness boasts a wider selection of amenities alongside a cinema, the Dock Museum where you can learn about the exciting local history, a golf course, a beautiful beach and much more to keep you and your loved ones entertained. Spend a day in Ulverston for wonderful shopping experiences as well as the wonders of the Laurel and Hardy Museum, glassblowing experiences and the Sir John Barrow Monument, offering something at any time of year that you visit. Further afield rests the beauty of the Lake District National Park, with its spectacular lakes and rugged fell mountains providing walking and cycling experiences like no other, it's well-worth a visit for its remarkable scenery. With so much excitement within easy reach, Roose makes a wonderful base from which to explore the coast and countryside of Cumbria.
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
We stayed at Colt Park Cottage near Ulverston for the October 2023 half term. The cottage is easy to find with off the road parking adjacent to the property. On arrival, the cottage was warm and welcoming with a lovely gift hamper for ourselves. The property has everything you need for a home from home. It has a well equipped kitchen and some lovely extras like the coffee maker. Equipment is of a good spec and Helen and Mark have really thought carefully about what their guests may need and provided it. The cottage has a walled garden and a fantastic view of Morecambe Bay. We watched both a sunrise and the sunset with equally stunning views. It is within easy driving distance of the lakes and was a wonderful base for our trip away. I can imagine it to be a great getaway at Christmas time. I would highly recommend this cottage to friends and family. Floki recommends the ice-cream from the local ‘Roy’s ice cream’ van by the bay!
