Location Details

Set amidst open fields and winding hedgerows, the North Cornwall village of St Newlyn East offers a peaceful and relaxing alternative to the bustling, vibrant town of Newquay – situated under five miles away. The perfect starting point for a number of walks through picturesque countryside, this lovely town is centrally located for a variety of excellent attractions including many stately homes and gardens, model railways, theme parks, fishing villages and harbours – not to mention some of the UK's best surfing beaches. For a livelier nightlife, visitors will enjoy the various clubs and pubs in nearby Newquay, though also of interest in the town are the impressive Zoo and Sea Life Centre. Also within easy driving distance is the cathedral city of Truro and the magnificent Eden Project.

Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.

Reviews

Ask yourself this question !, why not so many reviews about this place! This is advertised as a cottage, when it's a barn conversion ( poorly constructed) . On arrival at the property the owner of the 4 properties will call across to see you , and try to befriend you( is this to make you feel as though you should not review his place, you decide) firstly we noticed cobwebs in every room, under the kitchen table, behind the sofa, behind the bookcase, ground floor w.c , stairs areas, every room had cobwebs and spiders, the rear bedroom window did not close due to broken hinges( this should be picked up as a maintenance issue/ fault) the spider issue was pointed out to the owner, who sort of brushed it off as it's common as living in the country, when clearly it because of the poor conversion of this barn, there was gaps everywhere, around pipe, between walls, oak beams had gaps that you could slide a pencil into. This is poorly constructed and if I was the owner I would certainly be embarrassed, staying here did spoil our family holiday, as we did check out after 4 nights, we then booked into a clean hotel, what should of been a good holiday turned out to be a nightmare due to this cottage/ barn, ( empty barn adjoining this place has gaps leading and allowing mice, rats , spiders to enter this property, the front door has a 10-15 mm gap at the bottom. I have lodged a complaint with the booking agent, they where advised that the owner has installed an electronic device deterrent to prevent insects( surely this is admitting to a problem) . But after spending over £1,200 plus on just 4 nights, then having to book into a clean hotel, the owner of wheal honey has not offered any partial refund, this shows how selfish and inconsiderate this owner is, it also makes me realize that the rumours are true about Cornwall holiday property owners: that they just want your money! I will rate this 1star just for the location off the dirt track down the winding lane, where the car gets scratches from the bushes...please BE AWARE.

A little home from home!! Arrived after along journey and we could get in early to the cottage which was very helpful as we had a little one with us. We were greeted by the owner and showed round the property to which we discovered a lovely bottle of wine left for us and a pint of milk in the fridge, with tea, sugar and coffee available which makes a difference. Fully Kitted out kitchen including washer and dryer with washing powder to use! The sky TV with Wi-Fi was very helpful when you have a little one to entertain and you’re trying to unpack. The cottage is very comfortable and in a great location with great views and no noise, making for a very peaceful nights sleep, on a very comfortable bed. Didn’t want for anything! Would definitely stay again!

On our family holiday to Cornwall we booked a self-catered cottage. We were looking for somewhere that was kid friendly and self-catered and ticked many many boxes such as Sky, wifi, washing machine, etc. I found the cottage that ticked all these boxes and more on Sykes Cottages. Wheal Honey! The kitchen is well stocked with under counter fridge, stove and oven, washing machine, dryer and dish washer. You also have pots and pans and cutlery and anything you'd need to cook and clean. Everything you could need from dishwasher tablets, detergent, tea bags, coffee. The hosts Ann and Howard also provided a pint of milk and a bottle of red wine which I thought was a very nice touch. It allowed us to have a cup of tea fresh from driving more than 5 hours! All in all the cottage was very comfortable and very nicely furnished. We could even picture ourselves living there! Ann and Howard were very accommodating. Howard came to greet us shortly after we'd settled in and if we needed something he was happy to help us procure it. Even our really random request for super glue! If you're looking for a cottage to stay in, I highly recommend Wheal Honey! For a full review and photographs please see my blog Hobson Experiences

We arrived and was welcomed with a bottle of red wine as well as loads of tea, coffee, and sugar. Plus also milk in the fridge. The holiday cottage is absolutely fantastic and have extras which we didn’t imagine such as sky, WiFi, and even a dishwasher. We were greeted by Howard who asked us if everything was ok and if we needed help with anything then they only lived round the corner. A folder is also provided with numbers of local services including a restaurant. Cant fault anything with anything. The hospitality is top notch and would definitely come back. Keep up the good work!!!

I don’t normally add reviews, although always read other peoples, however this is an amazing place. Owners very welcoming (even down to a pint of milk and a bottle of wine on arrival) and accommodating, cottage very well equipped and in such a lovely setting. Very close to lots of activities across Cornwall. A real home from home. Will definitely go back next time we’re in Cornwall

Liked everything. It is in an idyllic location and was very quiet and peaceful, and the cottage was a real home from home with everything needed to make it a relaxing holiday.

The accommodation is fabulous. The property is located down a small country lane but because of this it is tranquil. The views are spectacular, out across rolling fields complete with sheep, cows, pheasants and all manor of birds, we think we even heard an owl one day. It has outdoor seating with a BBQ and a large shared sloping lawn. Inside the accommodation is perfect. The bathroom is large and the bedrooms are airy with very comfortable beds. The kitchen area is well equipped (although we didn't do much cooking) complete with dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. The owners were very welcoming and full of information on the local area. The property is perfectly positioned for travelling around the area. We had a brilliant holiday and would definitely recommend it and hope to return ourselves.

This is an absolutely fabulous cottage, set in a peaceful rural area but only a few minutes from the main roads. Everything you could possibly need is provided. The owners are a delightful couple who suggested places for us to visit. We would return in a heartbeat.

A lovely, comfortable, well-equipped and maintained cottage in a beautiful setting.

This is by far our favourite property from Sykes and we have been visiting Sykes properties for eight years! But shhh..keep it quiet as we want to keep it free for us to visit again. A beautiful place to visit if you would like to stay somewhere with relaxing views and be accessible to lots of Cornwall's treasures like Padstow, Rock or Marazion. Very lovely for families with beach enthusiasts.

Wheal Honey, what a gem. Set in an idyllic location within a complex of barn conversations and lovingly restored to the highest specification by its very friendly and helpful owner. We could not have wished for a more cosy comfortable home for our holiday. Everything about the 'cottage' was perfect, which during a spell of awful weather was very much appreciated! I cannot fault this beautiful cottage, or the concern for our comfort. I would happily recommend this location to anyone. I feel that although it is rated 4 Star, it should really be 5, so glad we found it. Can't wait to return.

This accommodation was very homely and perfect to come home to at the end of the day. The facilities were excellent.

The cottage itself is a great retreat to stay indoors even. The view of countryside, the early morning sunrise and sunset in the evening is simply super. The décor and setting of the cottage is warm and everything you may need is made available and of quality. The warm welcome by the owners and the way they looked after our family was excellent. We enjoyed our stay with two kids and they too were very excited. The place is in close reach to the beaches as well as other entertainment in the area. Definitely a place to stay if you love countryside and the beaches and want to get away from the usual typical busy urban lifestyle.

Very good quality cottage, great quiet countryside location but town and coast only a short drive away.

An excellent property in a stunning location. Possibly one of the best holidays we have had to Cornwall and we would love to come back again. It is great for families with small children.

Rated by Mr Maxey reviewed on 17th August 2014

Superb Cornish beaches; great accommodation, quiet area, very good spec, very cosy, lovely views and big open garden for kids to run. All the interior looked brand new and extremely well furnished: kitchen, diner and lounge. Would stay again!

Rated by Dr Fish reviewed on 7th August 2014

We spent a week at this cottage from 5th July. Generally the place is very comfortable although the bathroom left a little to be desired (the mirror was not really high enough for someone of six feet tall to shave without having to duck down and there could be more shelving). The kitchen facilities were more than adequate for our needs. The location is very rural and apart from the occasional pheasant extremely quiet. The view from the back across a fertile valley to a small farm on the other side of the hill was lovely. We were made very welcome and Howard and Ann who were more than happy to give us recommendations and directions to the local eating places and shops.
