With mesmerising, uninterrupted views stretching across the bay to the Solway Firth and Scotland beyond, this cottage makes an ideal base for families and couples exploring this charming corner of Cumbria. Set solely on the ground floor, the cottage has two cosy bedrooms, a luxury bathroom with a double-ended bath, and a superb shower room. There is an open plan living area, beautifully furnished and equipped ensuring your stay will be perfect. The dramatic scenery is brought inside with large, feature French windows opening out on to a beautiful decking area, so no matter what the weather you will always be able to admire the scenery. From the cottage, steps enjoy direct access down to the shore where in season you may observe the unique and traditional style of fishing in the Solway Firth called Haaf Netters. The Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail starts in the village and stretches right across the country to the east coast, and whilst guests may wish to walk the 73 miles to Wallsend, having a superb pub serving delicious fare at the very start may delay your departure! A wonderful way to explore the Solway Coast, an Area of Outstanding National Beauty and World Heritage Site, is by bicycle and although the Hadrian’s Cycleway also runs through the village, there are also numerous other circular routes on hand. Wildlife lovers can embrace the local nature reserves with both Dumbrugh Moss and the South Solway Mosses close by, and positioned right on the edge of the estuary at this Bowness-on-Solway cottage, you are already in a renowned World Ramsar site for marine birds. Being close to the border of Scotland, Carlisle, known as the border city, is well worth a visit, or how about a day at the races? Cross the border just into Scotland and visit Gretna Green, just over 20 miles away. Whatever your reason to visit this fascinating area and this fabulous cottage, you will undoubtedly wish you had found this idyllic location years ago and will look forward to enjoying the superb accommodation again and again!

The Lord Melvyn Bragg novel, 'A Time to Dance', featured the town of Thurston, which was based on Wigton and the local area. A lovely base for a holiday exploring Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.

Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
We are actually staying in Solway Cottage right now & this is our 2nd visit second and it won't be our last either, it is absolutely fabulous just like the first time we stayed here but the new sofas are soooo comfy and the view from them is just incredible as you are looking straight out over the water & looking right across to Scotland, honestly the views are STUNNING with sunsets that take your breath away. You even have your own set of steps down to the estuary which is so lovely to walk along but be careful as there are sinking sands in parts and watch the tide as it is very fast but it is brilliant to watch with all the birdlife on the waters edge ,t he cottage has everything that you could need and has its own parking too which is always bonus. The little pub in the village is great and the food is fabulous too and the staff are so friendly. We cannot recommend Solway Cottage enough, Bill & Pasty really do work hard to keep everything so beautiful here. Many Thanks Jules & Stuart x
We managed to book this cottage last minute thanks to someone cancelling - and how lucky were we! This place was just perfect. The photos don’t do it justice - the views from the lounge and bedrooms are just incredible. This cottage has everything you need. Fully equipped kitchen, 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, lovely outdoor furniture & BBQ. Ånd so much more. Books, games, maps, 3 TVs. And everything spotlessly clean. Bill & Patsy the owners could not have been more helpful or friendly. Information prior to arrival and whilst we were there was spot on. They really have done such a fab job with this place. If you can tear yourself away from the view, there’s so many local walks and a really good pub close by (Kings Arms). We also ventured into Scotland a few times as well as driving through the northern Lake District. And finally, the sunsets were just amazing. A perfect home from home .
Just returned from a 3 night family Easter break & this place is amazing! It has everything you need & spotlessly clean. The owners make you feel very welcome. The pictures on the website do not do it justice. We planned on venturing out to visit different places but didn’t get in the car once! The ever changing views are fantastic & was so peaceful & relaxing. Had some lovely walks along the coastline, the kids thoroughly enjoyed bog jumping! (Nearly lost their trainers.) Went for some food at the Kings Arms pub & would recommend the food, especially the pizzas. Would definitely recommend a stay here & will hopefully return one day.
Writing this on our last night, we all feel so sad to be leaving! Even though we only came for 3 nights it has been a perfect, relaxing getaway. The one thing that I’ll miss the most is the amazing view from the cottage, just beautiful at all times of the day. The cottage itself is fantastic, has everything touch could wish for plus more. Felt like a home away from home. It’s clean, modern, comfortable and homely. This was our first time to the area, we loved exploring and going on walks. We will definitely be coming back to stay here! We’ve raved about this cottage so much that my auntie is going to book it too! Thank you so much we have had a great stay!!
Luxury cosy cottage in an area of outstanding beauty. This is the perfect retreat when you feel the urge to recharge. From booking to arriving to staying there -everything was stress-free. The view is outstanding and good to watch in all weathers. Recommend that you bring your basic provisions (or stop in ASDA at Carlisle) as the village does not have a shop. The village does have a decent walkers pub in the Kings Arms which serves good food and great beer. The cottage itself is exceedingly well equipped - loads of crockery, full range of tip-top appliances- and felt like a home from home. There books, maps, walking routes, DVD, CDs and board games to keep you entertained. The wi-fi is free but does drop away sometimes, which is a good excuse to step away from the e-mail or the game station! The beds are exceptionally comfy and come complete with an electric blanket. The coastal walk from the doorstep of the cottage is lovely and there are plenty of interesting day-trips within 40 mins drive. The owners live next door and are very helpful and work hard to keep the cottage in tip-top condition.
Had a wonderful week away here - views are amazing and can't get over how high spec this cottage is - the kitchen is better equipped than our own! The huge glass doors allow you to enjoy the scenery even in poor weather and the high quality TVs, bluray, sound systems etc. mean you will be entertained in all weathers! Would recommend: Nearby RSPB Campfield Marsh reserve Wallsend Tea Rooms (Bowness) Kings Arms (Bowness) Hope and Anchor (nearby Port Carlisle - locally sourced food, gorgeous meals and amazing homemade desserts)
Just returned from the most amazing cottage probably the best we have ever stayed in. More equipment than you could ever need or use during the week more than home from home. The cottage was spotless and had good quality fittings bright and airy. The little gifts a lovely touch. The owners we lovely and very helpful. The best thing though has to be the private patio offering us every changing views wonderful wildlife and stunning sunsets a photographers paradise. With excellent walks from your doorstep this has to be a not to be missed cottage if you enjoy peace and quiet.
We were made very welcome and the Cottage was very well equipped and there were great views.
Solway Cottage is a beautiful cottage with stunning views over the Solway sound. The cottage had all you need and more. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The only thing missing was the sun, so we couldn't use the beautiful sun deck and BBQ, but from inside we could enjoy the views as well.
Fabulous Cottage in a very peaceful and quiet village location, with a perfect, ever changing view - even when the weather wasn't so good. The Cottage was clean and had everything we needed and more.
Fabulous cottage in a very peaceful and quiet village location, with a perfect, ever changing, view - even when the weather wasn't so good. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed and more. Within easy walking distance of the Kings Arms, which provided good pub grub.
The best thing about this property and the thing that attracted us to book is the view over the Solway Firth. The cottage itself has everything you could need and is comfortable and inviting as well as modern. All in all we had a perfect holiday.
What a fantastic cottage! Direct access to the empty beach! Loved it! The cottage was clean, modern and very well equipped. The weather was fantastic and the outside decking area was an ideal place to sit and admire the view, have drinks or a barbecue. I spent a lot of time on the patio reading, listening to music and watching my husband jogging on the beach!! Went for a Sunday session at the local (2 minutes walk) and found the staff very welcoming indeed! Lots of wild life and the local pheasant kept us amused on the lawn! Bill and Patsy were great hosts and such a lovely couple. We stay in cottages often and this is one of the best we have stayed in! Loved it and didn't want to leave. Thank you Bill and Patsy!
Loved the property! The owners were excellent hosts and such a lovely couple. Solway Cottage was clean, modern and well equipped. Sitting on the the patio with the stunning view, drinking wine accompanied by great weather was like being abroad! Stunning! Will definitely recommend to friends!
Fabulous position, quiet location and immaculately clean property.
The aspect of the cottage & both of us being lovers of wildlife, we were very pleased with the number of nature reserves and Mosses within easy reach of the superb Solway Cottage.
Great location for a relaxing holiday. Waking up to the birds singing, this cottage is fantastic. Everywhere was spotless and it had everything you need to have a good time.
We could not fault one thing about this very well presented home from home. The views over Solway Firth from the cottage are fantastic and the sunsets are to die for. We would recommend Solway Cottage to everyone and will visit again.
One of the best holiday homes we have stayed in, the kitchen in particular was very well equipped. The whole house was very clean and comfortable, would definitely recommend to friends and family.
The Cottage was absolutely spotless, the furniture was excellent. There was all the cooking equipment needed. There was ample crockery and cutlery and the view facing us through the patio doors was breathtaking. Everything was tastefully decorated, this was the best Sykes cottage by far.
Stunning views over the Solway to Scotland. Lovely area to explore. Very well equipped cottage with everything you could possibly need for an enjoyable holiday.
The cottage lived up to our expectations in every way, one of the best we have ever stayed in.
The views were outstanding and the owners were on hand if needed. The cottage was of high standard. There are great walks and fantastic sunsets.
In a beautiful location and so immaculate, very comfortable accommodation. The hosts were very welcoming. Quiet and relaxing with amazing views.
This house lived up to everything it said it was so well equipped . The owners never bother you and the views from the patio area are stunning. We never closed the blinds all week because every evening as the sun set was like looking at a different painting. The bedrooms were very comfy and it was almost disabled friendly, the only draw back was if it rained and we wanted to eat my wife couldn't get on the bar stools to eat at the worktop she had to stand. Other than that it was a fantastic property to stay in . The property was in a very remote area with the nearest supermarket being a 25 mile round trip but as I said if you want a relaxing holiday this place is excellent.
A lovely cottage in a beautiful setting with great views of the Solway and across to Scotland. Very tranquil and relaxing. The owners were welcoming, friendly and helpful.
I was so impressed with the cottage and the location. Everything was spotless, it had a lovely homely feel and we settled in straight away. It had everything we needed and it soon felt like home. The view from the cottage were stunning, something I could definitely get used to. There was so much to do and see, we were left with lots of leaflets and brochures on the attractions which was very helpful because I wouldn't have known where to start otherwise! Definitely one of the most stunning locations in the UK I've ever been to. Would love to come back next year and visit more of this incredible place, thank you for an amazing holiday!
An exceptional holiday cottage, obviously a lot of thought had been given to requirements & comfort. A stunning setting.
An excellent property with high quality fixtures and fittings which had been thought out really well. The view from the balcony was superb and the access to the shore was great. An example of the attention to detail was demonstrated when we had a short power cut after dark and low level emergency lighting cut in, well thought out. The owner has provided an excellent library of books music and DVDs. We will visit again hopefully.
This property is fitted out to a very high level of quality and the location in an elevated position over the Solway Firth is idyllic. Everything you could want facility wise, is there. In March despite the windy weather at times the cottage was always warm and cosy. We planned a number of trips out but didn't stir far when the shoreline and surrounding villages were so interesting. I would recommend that any visitor read the book on the History of the Solway Firth from Bill's extensive "library". This lead us to Burgh by Sands to see the church where Edward 1st lay in state in 1307, to look into the history of Port Carlisle and the local bird sanctuary. This quite oasis has an interesting history! We will return.
A fantastic place to holiday. Views over Solway Firth were great even in winter. The owner was charming and very helpful.
There were plenty of places to visit and things to do, also the wildlife and bird life in the area. The views were stunning looking out over the firth and looking at Scotland.
It was in a fantastic location with a stunning view of the estuary. The cottage is very new, having just been completed in September, so everything is new, fresh and clean. The beds are comfy, the toilets, shower room and bath are all of a very high standard, and the kitchen/lounge open area allows you to cook whilst still being in the company of your friends or family.
A fantastic week away. The location is perfect, offering an uninterrupted view of the Solway Firth and the constant changing of the tides was great to witness. Everything about the cottage was perfect and spotlessly clean. All the equipment you could need and the owners have put together lots of useful information to get the most out of your stay. A great location for a break away from it all to properly unwind.
An amazing place, we have loved our stay. The cottage had everything (and more) that you could possibly want and all so beautifully and thoughtfully put together. There are brilliant walks from the cottage, you could stay a week and not use your car. It is peaceful and really off the beaten track and feels like a real escape, but within a reasonable time you can be in the heart of the Lake District or over the border into Scotland. It was wonderful, we couldn't find a single fault!
The location of the cottage was marvellous, overlooking the sea.The decor of the whole cottage was wonderful and we were very comfortable. The underfloor heating kept the rooms cosy. Also impressed that the saucepans/bakeware were non-stick and there was a dishwasher, so that meant we could spend even more time relaxing and enjoying the views. Bed was very comfy and only a two minute walk to the local friendly pub. Ideal location for getting into Scotland or the Lakes. Incredible value for money. We highly recommend!
Solway Cottage is in a quiet location with beautiful views of the coast. The owners are very friendly and helped to make the stay a memorable one. The cottage itself is a gem, fully furnished with everything you may need. Also to be mentioned is the amount of information the owners have gathered to make the most of your stay. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet place in a beautiful location.
Nothing was too much trouble for the owners. Fantastic location for walkers and birdwatchers and historians. Highest standard of cleanliness and furnishings in the cottage. Good eating nearby, phone service and wifi connections all good. You will not be disappointed!
