On the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park is the prestigious market town of Helmsley. Lying in a sheltered corner of Upper Ryedale, this lovely settlement boasts a spacious market square surrounded by houses, hotels and shops as well as a 12th Century castle. English Heritage's Rievaulx Abbey is close by too and there is a multitude of excellent walks in the near vicinity, the most well known of these - the Cleveland Way, starting in the village itself. The region's capital of York is less than an hour's drive to the south, whilst Scarborough and the east coast just over an hour. The famous steam railway line at Pickering is just a thirty minute drive away.
The North York Moors National Park covers 554 square miles, with landscape ranging from heather-clad moorland and deep secluded dales, to the cliffs and coves of the magnificent coastline making it a haven for walkers.
Booked to stay in Pegs Cottage through Sykes in October 2019, my partner and I were really excited due to some of the reviews we had seen but upon arriving we started to wonder whether these previous good reviews had been made up. The property was surrounded by rats, being from the countryside this isn't something new to us but having them so close to the property door was just horrific. Especially with the leptospirosis risk to ourselves and our dogs. The cottage inside smelt like stale urine and had alot of mould around every window and even the blinds. The cutlery drawer had hair and crumbs in so clearly hadn't been cleaned for a while. We chose to leave the same day after speaking to Sykes, the owner said she wasn't going to give us a full refund due to their being dog hair on the rug (because our dogs are supposed to levitate around the dog friendly cottage) and apparently there was evidence of us using the oven, which we didn't so again clearly shows it hadn't been cleaned from the previous guests. We luckily got our money back from our bank. Also dealing with the customer service team from Sykes was a challenge in itself, especially Andrea who twisted our words and lied on many occasions, one of them being that we would get a full refund from Sykes if the cottage owner decided not to give us one but then Andrea had a change of heart and decided she had never said this. All in all a very bad experience and the owner of the cottage is a very rude lady. Go to this cottage at your own risk and if you do take dogs to this dog friendly cottage then make sure they don't moult! Thanks for taking the time to read
Stayed with our two dogs in this nice, clean and tidy, cosy little cottage for a long weekend. Would I go back again for another visit - yes!
From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed, the dog had free run of the entire fully secure garden areas including the owners she loved exploring the orchard. The cottage was well equipped with everything you could need , the farm opposite sells eggs ours were that fresh they were still warm. The Cottage is well located for exploring the area with Castle Howard about 15 minutes away York and Whitby about 1hr,Helmsley the local town is 2 miles away and you can get everything you need. Tonia the owner is lovely and extremely helpful to the point that our dog suffered an emergency she directed us to her vets and even offered an old t-shirt so that she couldn’t get at her stitches We will Definitely be returning
We have just returned from a week's break at Pegs Cottage in Pockley, close to Helmsley. It was a perfect break for us and our two dogs who were secure in the grounds of the accommodation and able to explore the whole garden area. We had our own parking space which was close to the cottage and away from the road. Tonia made us all very welcome and we felt at ease when she told us our dogs were free to explore the whole garden area which was secure throughout. Our dogs loved exploring Tonia's garden as well as the small orchard where they could run around or have a leisurely sniff! The cottage is lovely, very cosy and clean with all amenities. The log burner warms the whole cottage in minutes for cosy evenings if the temperature outside is cold. The kitchen is equipped with everything you might need if you choose to prepare your own meals including different serving dishes and plates. We were provided with milk, tea, sugar and coffee as well as bedding and towels and cleaning products. The lounge flooring is wooden so easy to clean if it is wet outside and you have children or pets. The double bedroom is cosy with plenty of room to store all your clothes and the en-suite has a spacious shower with a heated towel rail. We bought fresh eggs from across the road which were probably laid the same morning we cooked them. Helmsley is a short drive from the cottage where there are a couple of small supermarkets for food shopping, pubs, deli's and many other shops and attractions. We sampled a meal from the Helmsley Spice Indian Restaurant during our stay and would highly recommend this as well as Hunters of Helmsley for fresh local produce including cheeses and pastries. We will certainly return for a visit in the future.
Good location only a few minutes away from Helmsley with its quaint shops and vibrant Friday markets and from the abbey ruins at Rievaulx and Castle Howard with its extensive gardens and interesting history as well as access to walks on the Moors. The cottage is well quipped with all amenities including washing machine and the hostess is nearby if any help is required. We enjoyed our stay in this quiet little village with plenty of interest in the surrounding neighbourhood. The cottage was clean, comfortable and had a welcoming ambience.
It was a lovely peaceful location in a quiet village/hamlet. The cottage had everything you needed and as we took our two dogs the garden was ideal as it is large and enclosed. It was a lovely relaxing holiday and we hope to return to this part of Yorkshire as there is lots to see in the area.
We liked the situation. Although we didn't use the garden because of the weather, in the summer it would be a huge bonus. There was a good selection of books about the area and DVDs for cold, wet evenings. In all we had a very good time in Pegs Cottage.
Lovely, spotless, modernised cottage in a delightful area, ideal for exploring the Yorkshire North Moors. Very warm welcome by owner. Very effective heating during the cold snap we experienced, comprising gas central heating and a gas fire log effect log burner.
Peg's Cottage was lovely, cosy and perfect for our winter short break. The area is beautiful and would definitely return. We were made to feel very welcome.
We stayed at Pegs Cottage for a weekend break. We were not disappointed the reviews were true. The owner was very helpful when I rang to arrange the key pick up,she also provided fresh milk tea and coffee. She has two beautiful dogs and your dog will be made welcome. The bungalow has level access which made it easy for my disabled husband. The rooms were spotless and the ceasefire was so hot we only needed it on low to warm both the lounge and bedroom. The shower does have a high ledge but my husband managed to get in with my help, would have been better if I had his shower stool. The village of Pockley is so pretty with chocolate box thatched cottages mingled in with the other properties. If it had not rained all weekend we could of had some lovely walks from the property. Will definitely go back next year. Also can highly recommend the Helmsley Spice Indian restaurant and take away, the meal we had was first class.
The cottage is an ideal place for 2 to get away from the noise of roads etc. It was so quiet and peaceful there. It is in a beautiful setting, ideal for walks but near enough to other places to eat out or visit. We will definitely book it again.
This was one of the nicest cottages we have ever stayed in. Very well equipped and warm and cosy. Owner was very friendly and welcoming and it was very dog friendly. Would recommend this cottage highly.
We have been to many cottages in Yorkshire over the last 30 years but in Peg's Cottage we have found a real jewel in the crown. It had everything you needed, was clean & tidy, extremely comfortable and set in beautiful gardens and a wonderful rural setting. It was very doggy friendly which for us is a bonus, and the owner was warm, welcoming and friendly. A very pretty village with friendly locals. A real home from home and we will certainly go back without hesitation. We had a truly wonderful stay.
We have just returned from a week at Peg's Cottage. It's a lovely cottage, all very new and nicely decorated. The cottage is ideal for couples as it has only one double bedroom, with open storage space, and a small hanging space, open shelving and a corner dressing table, with mirror, there is a lamp on the dressing table and wall lights above the bed, the bed has extra storage below, which makes it a bit of a hard bed to sleep on. The shower is raised and has a folding door, this would not be suitable for anyone who needed level access shower, I had the help of my Partner to get in and out of the shower, the grab rail is placed too far back on the wall, nearer to the corner, away from the shower, it is very nicely tiled and has a toilet and handbasin, along with a heated towel rail, that warms the bathroom, there is a basin light with shaver point. The bungalow has laminate flooring, in the hall, lounge and bathroom, the bedroom has fitted carpet, and the kitchen has quarry tiles, with a bit of a lip between the lounge and kitchen floors, a bit of a trip hazard. The lounge is spacious with a two seater sofa, and arm chair, small TV, coffee table, and table with the TV on, a pine dining table and two dining chairs, ideal for eating breakfast and dinner. The kitchen is WOW, its a lovely kitchen anyone would love to have in their home, it has plenty of saucepans, baking sheets, and other ovenproof dishes, gorgeous work services, and a lovely deep sink with laboratory style mixer tap, microwave, electric cooker, toaster and coffee maker, washing machine and fridge, all the essentials you could need, however, a few little things like colander, grater, which would be a bonus. The cottage is centrally heated, but the icing on the cake is the gas fire, in the style of a log burner, which on a cold night would be heaven, we did try it a couple of times, and it took minutes to warm the place up, I wish we had one at home, its gorgeous. As this is her first year doing a holiday let, I can say she has thought of everything, the secure on site parking, double glazing, comfy sofa, fluffy towels, constant/instant hot water, are a big plus in a holiday cottage. When we go back to Yorkshire we will definitely book Peg's Cottage, its a safe secluded and quiet bolt hole, ideal for a relaxing holiday without constant traffic and ideal for star gazers, as no street lighting to mar the view of the sky at night. Its only 2 miles from Helmsley town centre, which has ample shops, CO-Operative, Cost Cutter, as the supermarkets, the smaller shops are a deli selling loads of cheese, olives, cooked meat, pies, bread and a wealth of pickles, jams, spreads and cakes, voted the "Best Little shop in World" and a few other small shops, selling fruit and veg, original sweetshop, gifts , jet workshop, jewellery, newsagents, flowers and clothing, for the more decreeing, there is a a Brewery, which has a shop and also does brewery tours, of the brewing process, not far from this is the Birds of Prey Centre, we didn't get chance to visit, but we will next time, there are pubs, restaurant's and take a ways, Fish and chips, and a department store Browns, and for that really special gift, they have a shop Monsoons for Moorcroft, and it is the real deal, along with antiques shops and all the usual gift shops, Friday is Market Day, we tried the Chocolate Brownies, made local, they were to die for, along with the antique stalls and the usual weekly market stalls, Helmsley is the place to visit and to stay at Peg's is perfect, relaxing, quiet and ideal for that special get away. AS Tonia has two lovely dogs, its ideal for anyone who likes pets, the dogs are gorgeous, and well behaved, its the new jewell in the crown of the Yorkshire Dales, one not to be missed. Check it out!!! you won't be disappointed, I promise you.
A beautiful, compact and cosy cottage in a picturesque little hamlet. Perfect for myself and my wife for a relaxing long weekend. The dogs loved the huge, enclosed garden. The owner was very helpful and informative, letting us know of the amenities in the surrounding area, which was useful as the hamlet is residential only (as we wanted I must add).
Peg's Cottage is a beautiful home from home set in the peace and quiet of a tiny village. The gas log burner ensured that even though the weather was chilly we were as warm as toast inside. The garden is completely secure so we knew our dog couldn't escape. There are many walks both right from the doorstep and only a short drive away.
Peg's Cottage is in a lovely quiet location close to Helmsley, which is a very attractive country town. The cottage is pet-friendly and the garden is secure and safe. The owner and her dogs are very friendly and welcoming. We were there during cold weather but the cottage is warm and cosy.
We were well looked after by the owner without her being intrusive. The accommodation was perfect for what we wanted - a cosy, comfortable, quiet and peaceful time. The area is delightful for country walks and exercising our dog.
The cottage was lovely... very snug and warm. The gas fire in the lounge was perfect for cold winter days we hardly needed the central heating despite it being very cold and frosty outside. The information on the area was welcome and we made use of the pack giving details of nearby walks. Tonia was welcoming but not intrusive and left us doggy bags dog bowls and chews for our two dogs. We stayed over Christmas & I was able to cook a full xmas lunch in the well stocked kitchen. Overall we had a lovely relaxing break.
Pegs cottage is a lovely cosy little cottage, was spotlessly clean and we were made very welcome including our dog who had a great time, will be visiting again, would defiantly recommend.
We loved our stay at Peg's Cottage! The cottage itself was perfectly sized for myself and my boyfriend. We took along our dog too and she had a great time. It was in great driving distance of the local town but we had a real sense of isolation too.
