Reviews

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sandy Knowes. This was our second visit and we appreciated the newly refurbished bathroom and kitchen. It was great for the dog, being just 50 yds from the wonderful beach and also the coastal path. The log fire and central heating was much appreciated during the cold of February! Cinty is an excellent host. I certainly recommend Sandy Knowes.

This is the third or fourth time staying here and we will keep returning as long as we are able. The cottage is clean, comfy and very very cosy. The weather this time wasn't the best so we just chilled, just what we needed really. Cinty really goes above and beyond, a really great host who adds some extra treats which are very much appreciated. Location is everything and this cottage has it in bucket and spades!! While you're there try one of the Running Fox cafes, amazing food!! The Amble Butcher does the best pies. A warm welcome given if you attend the village Chapel and tea and biscuits after the service, what a bonus. Cinty, thank you again x

Owner very helpful. Quiet beach across the road. Hauxley Discovery centre within walking distance with great coffee and cakes. Cragside, Warkworth castle and beach well worth a visit. Amble a nice town to walk round and get on a boat from to see the puffins. Widdington Inn great for meals out. All in all a great place to stay for a quiet relaxing holiday.

Beautiful location, a stones throw from the beach and view of Coquet island - you can kyak around it and say hello to puffins and seals! The cottage itself is comfortable, cosy and clean - a perfect place to relax to the sound of waves on the shore. If you want to venture further Amble, Warkworth and Alnwick are nearby and all well worth a visit.

Part of me doesn't want to write a review I want to keep it to myself!! The other part of me wants to tell everybody and their granny how wonderful this village and cottage is!! The village is close to my heart and has family connections so I'm a little bit biased but you won't be disappointed. Wonderful location, stunning views, lovely friendly locals. The cottage is just lovely. Cosy, comfortable, quiet, a little treat on arrival, and a lovely friendly owner. What more could you ask for? We even had super weather for November which in turn meant stunning sunrises, worth getting up early for. A walk along to the cafe at the Wildlife Discovery Centre is a must. Friendly staff and delicious scones! Can't wait to return

Perfect holiday with a dog- cozy comfortable lounge with woodburner, and stunnng early morning walks on the beautiful beach with the sun rising over the sea. The owner was very helpful when we needed her. Well equipped cottage in an amazing location.

This was our second visit and we found the house as comfortable as before. The owner, Cinty is very friendly and helpful, she got back to us quickly when we had a query. The house was clean, well equipped and is in a great location.

The owner is lovely and really helpful. She goes out of her way to help and genuinely cares. We have been twice in the last few years and enjoyed our stays greatly, this year especially with the situation and us being very keen for a break. The beach is literally across the road which is amazing early in the morning with the dog and a coffee! Lots of good running and cycling to do as well. As people have said in the other reviews, the Cottage is well equipped and comfortable.

Excellent quaint cottage situated in a quiet small hamlet within a stones throw from a stunning stretch of coastline. We have stayed here three times and hope to visit again in the near future.

Just back from a week away in this lovely cottage located on the national cycle route 1 with the beach on the doorstep! The cottage and the beach are both pet-friendly, a fact that was much appreciated by our puppy. Easy access to the sandy beach meant we could pop back in quickly if the weather turned. The owner was in touch with us via phone and text with useful information about the cottage and surrounding area. We walked into Amble a couple of times for lovely meals at the Fish Shack and The Old Boathouse, not forgetting the delicious local Spurreli ice-cream. We hope to visit again next year.

We stayed here over Christmas and had the most magical time. I was really pleased when I first walked in to see it was all decorated with tree included which along with the sweets, wine and milk on arrival pointed towards a very thoughtful host. The facilities were all great, cosy bedrooms, nice bath, kitchen well stocked enough for us to cook a Christmas Dinner for three but there are two stand out gems to this cottage. 1. Is the location. Across the road from a quiet beach. Waking up to the sea every day was so relaxing and wonderful. I enjoyed taking my coffee and sitting and reading on the beach (despite the chill). Our dog loved it too, he's nervous around other dogs so the fact that the beach was not busy was a massive plus for us. Amble is nearby and is a lovely town with great pubs, chippies and local shops. And Alnmouth station is not too far with regular trains into Newcastle (20 mins) 2. The living space is just so cosy. We loved coming back from a walk and lighting a fire and chilling out on the comfy armchair/sofas. We loved every moment of our stay in Sandy Knowes it was just what we'd been imagining for our Christmas break.

Just returned from a week at Sandy Knowles. I’m so impressed with the accommodation. It was clean with a lovely bottle of wine and nice biscuits. The sitting room is very comfortable with a leather suite, sky TV, log burner, nest of tables and a table and chairs to sit at. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need. The bath room is ideal with a good shower and lovely bath. The bed is comfortable again with all you need. The location is ideal with a very short walk to the sandy and safe beach. If your into walking or cycling the cottage is superbly located. I would highly recommended this cottage.

What a great place for a holiday! Sandy Knowes cottage is cosy, comfy, and clean; and felt much like home from home. Waking up every morning to watch the sun rise over a sparkling sea was like being in a dream, and being able to walk barefoot from the cottage across the little country lane (a coastal footpath) and onto the quiet sandy beach within a minute is my idea of heaven! There are all kinds of seabirds; one morning four herons were within thirty feet of us. The local people are very friendly, and just a couple of miles away is the town of Amble, with interesting craft shops and super fish eateries. There are four nature reserves nearby, and more amazing beaches and impressive castles only a bit further away. Cinty (the owner) let our two salukis stay as well, and they were exhausted at the end of each day. This was the best holiday we have had in the UK in years, and really is the only place we will return to!

“While the location is 10 out of 10 there were a few things we were disappointed in.” The parking is not obvious and I had to contact the owner to clarify it, there needs to be a clear sign saying Sandy Knowes parking as the current signs say "No Parking". When we first went into the cottage, and for the full week we stayed, there was a smell like wet dog in the kitchen. While we appreciate the fact that it is a dog friendly cottage we have stayed in a lot of properties that are dog friendly and not had this problem before, maybe if the carpet in the kitchen was replaced with wood or stone flooring it would solve the issue. The bathroom needs some attention, the shower curtain particular needs replacing. In the living room wall lights have been put up but the brick dust has not been cleaned up. The cottage is ideal for the beach and for the Nature Reserve which you can walk to, and is a good base to travel around the area. The village is in a nice quiet location, and we really slept well.

Just got back from a lovely stay at Sandy Knowes cottage. The cottage has everything we needed. It's just across from the beach which our dog loved. We couldn't of picked a better week to stay here. The weather has been fabulous. It is a great location for travelling around Northumberland. On the Sunday we went into Amble and visited the market on the harbour and the little craft shops. We visited Warkworth and fed the ducks. We had a lovely walk from Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle. We drove through Eshott were we saw a red squirrel and a buzzard. If you go on the beach at low tide and walk to the right you might see some Herons. We was lucky enough to see 3 in the rocks, as well as some small birds. We stopped on the harbour one day to have pizza and sat outside watching the birds. At one point there was 8 Cormorant on the beach opposite the old boathouse restaurant. We also visitied Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre and had a lovely walk around the lake finding wildlife. You can't take your dog there though. There is a large field at the turning into the road every morning and late afternoon we saw 2 Herons in the field. On the whole we had a briiliant 5 days here. If you are wanting somewhere to stay in this area i don't think you will find anywhere better.

A good base to explore all Northumberland. A lovely quiet get away from it all cottage. All you need for a home from home. So, so close to the beach, lovely views over to Coquet Island. We walked along the beach from dawn until night. For a keen wildlife observer, the birds were varied and interesting. Visit the nearby nature reserve and don’t forget the cafe! Cinty the owner, although on holiday herself, was available to answer any questions and was very helpful. We would love to visit again.

It's been said before... A Hidden Gem! We can't recommend this lovely cottage in the most beautiful setting enough! Stepping out of the front door to walk a few yards to the gorgeous white sandy beach was a delight each day. It was our puppy's first experience of the seaside and he couldn't get enough of it!! Nor could we! The locals were so friendly and accommodating and because it was virtually residents only using the narrow lane, it was blissfully quiet. The cottage was cosy but spacious, with the downstairs living room having easy to clean wooden flooring (essential with dogs!) and the bedrooms and modern bathroom were lovely. We would have loved to experience the warmth of the wood burner in the fireplace but it was a little too hot when we visited! The owner, Cinty, could have not been more helpful and we loved the welcome bottle of wine!! Not sure we want to tell too many people about Sandy Knowes, but then that would be selfish!

The facilities in the cottage could not have been better there is everything you could possibly need provided in the cottage and the owner is extremely helpful. Beds are very comfortable and the whole cottage is very clean , certainly the place to stay for a truly relaxing break , we will be returning.

This is a lovely cottage really close to a great beach. It is so close that if you set off from the front door of the cottage at the time you started reading this review, you would be at the beach by now. The communication by the owner was spot on before we turned up, with her letting me know of some of the places to visit in Amble. I rate the beaches in Northumberland as some of the best in the UK, especially if you have a dog as you can find miles of mostly untouched beaches great for exercising dogs and even humans. The cottage is really nice with nice touches such as WiFi, a log burner and a digital radio. Yes there is no outside garden to sit in in the evening, but then again if you have a beach literally a stones throw away then that is not a problem. Amble is a pleasant 30 minute walk away along the dunes and beach, and it has all you need including a lot of really top notch places to eat such as The Fat Mermaid and Jaspers. Plus there's places like Alnmouth, Anwick and Warksworth near by which are all wroth a visit. The cottage is also on the Northumberland coastal path so you can follow this either way out of the front door to get to more stunning beaches and scenery. All in all a great cottage in a lovely part of the world.

We spent Dec 30th-Jan 7th at Sandy Knowes. What a fab week! New year & a birthday celebrated in the cosy cottage. Truly a home from home but with glorious surroundings! Beautiful sunrises, great having the beach to ourselves first thing in the morning. Missing the place now. Hope to visit again later this year. Great communication from the homeowner & a wonderful welcome hamper was there on arrival. Loved it all!

We stayed here over Christmas 2016 and loved it. It is literally less than 30 seconds to the beach over the virtually traffic-free road. We were lucky that we had sunshine every day so woke up every morning to fantastic sunrises over the beach and sea. Internally there's everything you could want - a lovey welcome pack, big comfortable furniture and a big solid-fuel fire - great during the cold evenings. With wi-fi and Sky TV, walks on the beach, swimming in the sea (not recommended in December without a wet-suit unless you're acclimatised for cold-water swimming), and plenty of great restaurants (Fat Mermaid, Fish Shack, Sea and Salt to name three) along the road in Amble this is perfect for a week of rest and relaxation. Highly recommended!

This was our second stay at Sandy Knowes this year and it was every bit as lovely as we remembered. It's location, which is in an area of outstanding beauty, is great with the beach directly across the road. We enjoyed our daily walks and Druridge Bay is close by and is also beautiful. The house is lovely, homely and cosy and the log burner was going when we arrived which made a warm and cheerful welcome. The lady owner is very helpful and we would definitely recommend Sandy Knowes for a relaxing or active holiday and we are very happy to be returning again next year.

We had a lovely week in Sandy Knowes Cottage. It was a fully equipped cottage , very comfortable beds, lovely views of the sea and a cosy lounge especially with log burner going. We loved just walking across the road to the beach. Our young grandson loved helping us collect driftwood for the log burner and looking in the rock pools when tide was out. We have never known our daughter and son in law's springer spaniel to be so exhausted due to so many walks on the beach. The welcome pack and toy basket was very much appreciated. The owner was very helpful on places to go with a little toddler. The only negative was there was no outside drying facilities which we would have liked due to having to do washing for a toddler. All in all we had a fantastic week, although the weather wasn't always on our side, we loved the location of this lovely cottage and would definitely recommend. We made so many wonderful family memories.

A cosy cottage in a perfect location for beach or country walks. There was lots of wildlife and it was good for birdwatching, there is a nature reserve close by. The log burner was lovely. It is excellent for bringing your dog. There are plenty of places to explore within a thirty mile radius, and lots of dog friendly areas. Would definitely recommend if you like a quiet spot.

Sandy Knowles is a gem on the Northumbria coast. The cottage sits about 50 yards from the beach which is sandy and easily accessible. The cottage itself was well equipped and very comfortable. Sandy Knowles will not disappoint and we would have no hesitation in recommending this cottage to our friends and family.

What a little gem of a cottage this is. The beach is just across the road and the only people you share it with are those that live in the small village of Low Hauxley as cottage is situated at the end of the road. As for the cottage it is fully equipped with everything you need, a real home from home and the owner left us a welcome pack that included a bottle of wine, very welcome. The surrounding area has lots to see and do all, within close proximity and I would not hesitate to recommend this cottage.

In February we had a lovely week in this cosy comfortable cottage. Everything that we needed was provided and we appreciated the complimentary wine and biscuits. It was nice to have reliable internet and Sky television for the cold winter nights when we didn't want to go out. The shower worked perfectly and we had no need to use the log burner as we were warm enough with the central heating. The beach is directly across the road and we had some nice daily walks. Unfortunately for us the cottage is booked until October and so we will not be able to return this year as hoped. The hostess is friendly and very helpful and nothing is too much trouble.

Stayed here 9th Jan 2016 for a week. Have been to Northumberland for many years now and this location was just perfect to go out the front door for walks on the beach. Can easily travel South, North or inland to the west from here to find Northumberland’s hidden gems. Once we had the fire lit the cottage was very cosy, and was a very peaceful relaxing location. The owner was very helpful with information and would definitely recommend. We note that the cottage is now fully booked until October so are disappointed we cannot book a revisit in September this year.

The location was fantastic, amazing beach on your doorstep. The cottage was very well equipped, I always take kitchen items that every other cottage we've stayed at didn't have, I didn't need them in this cottage as it had everything you could need and all kitchen equipment was very good quality. The sofas and bed were very comfortable another first in a rented cottage for us. Overall we had a very comfortable relaxing holiday.
