Cartmel Cottage is charming, stone-built, end-terrace cottage, just off the main square in the historic Wensleydale town of Middleham, 2.5 miles from Leyburn. Dating from circa 1850, the cottage features an open plan living area with exposed ceiling beams, a wood-burning stove, a modern, well-equipped kitchen and an open staircase leading to the two bedrooms. Outside, there is a small front garden with a seating area, from which guests can watch racehorses trot past each day from the nearby stables. The amenities of Middleham are close-at-hand, including excellent traditional pubs and local eateries. Known as “the Windsor of the North”, Middleham is nestled between the rivers Ure and Cover. Its Georgian and Victorian building are dominated by a 12th century castle, which was owned by the “Kingmaker” Earl of Warwick during the Wars of the Roses. In 1471 it became the principal northern residence of England's last Plantagenet king, Richard III, following his marriage to Warwick’s youngest daughter, Anne Neville. Wonderful walking can be enjoyed from the doorstep, and market towns such as Richmond, Leyburn, Masham, famous for the Theakston's and Black Sheep breweries, and Hawes, the home of Wensleydale cheese, are within easy reach. Please note that Middleham is a working rural town with farm traffic and horses on the roads from early in the morning.
The Wensleydale town of Middleham is renowned for its history and race horses. Much of the history is bound up with its Norman castle, which dates from 1190 and has a castle keep second in size only to the Tower of London. From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?
Great location with view of church tower and really enjoyed watching the horses go by each day. Nice to have a cottage here with outside space to sit in. Very dog friendly and a very enjoyable living space with window seat on the ground floor. Comfortable bed and bedside lights bright enough to read by!
Cartmel Cottage is a pleasant cottage, that is well prepared and in a lovely location. Bed was super comfortable!
This was a wonderful little cottage, slap bang in the centre of a lovely small town. We wanted a location where walking was accessible and it was. The town had several good pubs and also when we wanted to stay in the facilities in the cottage enabled us to cook a meal.
A cosy, comfortable cottage that had everything we needed for our stay.
It was our 2nd time at this cottage and again had a great time. A lovely little cottage, with everything you need. Middleham is a beautiful place too, with 4 good pubs all within 100m of the cottage. Would definitely recommend.
