This lovely detached house sits in the centre of the village of Barrow Hill. This is an ideal property for a family holiday. The dining room at The Old Grocery was once the village grocery store supplying the village with all essential provisions. Nowadays the room is just perfect for languorous dinners. The cosy sitting room, with its lovely view of the garden and cosy living flame gas fire, provides lots of space for guests to relax following another exciting day exploring this area. The three bedrooms offer flexible accommodation whatever the requirements. Outside the large lawned garden offers an ideal space for the children to run off the last of their energy, or for dining alfresco on a summer's evening. Children will also enjoy the playing field and children's playground in the village which are only a minute's walk away. The village is close to the beautiful Chesterfield Canal with great walking on the towpath known as The Cuckoo Way. The Trans-Pennine Trail is also close by and is just the ticket for walkers and cyclists. Guests can look out for the brass monkey on The Clocktower and it was said that its tail pointed upwards when the Staveley Coal and Iron Company was in profit, and downwards if it made a loss! There are lots of good local walks from the doorstep and with easy access to the Peak District, walkers will be spoilt for choice. Chesterfield really is a gateway for exploring Derbyshire and the glorious Peak District. Whether you’d like to visit stately homes, which the county has more than its fair share of, or castles, including the fairytale mansion of Bolsover Castle, this area has it all. It's not all about the superb adventure playground of Britain's first National Park, or the myriad of pretty villages scattered about, or the iconic Chatsworth House and Estate, it is the huge and diverse variety on offer here to suit everybody whatever their age. This is a wonderful holiday property.
The historic market town of Chesterfield acts as the gateway to the Peak District, and has much to offer visitors. The town is famous for its 14th Century church with "Crooked Spire", twisting curiously from its true centre, while the frequent bustling market days are ideal for exploring the many different specialist shops and stalls which line the old Market Hall and charming Shambles beyond. The town also boasts Queens Park, with its boating lake, walks and summer bandstand, as well as a museum and theatre. An interesting base for a break exploring the Peak District.

The back garden is large and totally dog proof, so you can relax. There is a utility area for towelling down and feeding dogs. The inside of the house is dated but really comfortable, roomy and well equipped. There is lots to do in the local area and some nice dog-friendly pubs. We had a great time and would recommend. Good value for money.
Lovely cottage in a great location. Spotlessly clean and very comfortable, it had everything we needed. We went with a baby and 2 dogs and had a great stay. The garden was amazing for the dogs, fenced in and secure. A place to return to. Highly recommend for comfort, cleanliness and location.
If you are looking to stay close to the Peak district then look no further. Our family (five adults) stayed for a number of nights and found this property very comfortable. This cottage had everything you could wish for including good wi-fi (much to the joy of my children!). The place was spotlessly clean and very well presented. Plenty of car parking space and near the village shop. The central heating made the rooms feel very comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped. A lovely welcome from the owner which made us feel most welcome.
Home from home, with plenty to offer for all ages. Cosy, clean and welcoming. Plenty of info to look at to cover the area. Welcome pack was a delightful treat. Lots of character in the house and a lovely garden too.
Arrived and delighted with house, garden and facilities. Very comfortable and weather was good. Dogs (2) very happy with garden and exercise in sports field next door.
A well equipped property with a cosy, homely feel with lots of nostalgic features. There was plenty to do and see in the area so will have to return.
The Old Grocery had real character and charm. There was evidence of the old owners interests and hobbies- I hope this remains as the property is developed. It is a nice change from generic 'budget hotel' style decor. Everything you could possibly need on a stay away was to hand and in good working order and the entire house was impeccably clean. The location of the property was perfect. We enjoyed canal and field walks with the dog as well as trips into Chesterfield town centre. Hands down, my favourite part of the trip was having such a generous garden full of varied mature trees. This green space really made the trip special.
