Eccles-on-Sea is a village on the east Norfolk coast between Happisburgh and Sea Palling. The beach is ideal for walking. Happisburgh is 2 miles away with its lighthouse, and nearby Sea Palling has facilities including a Jet Ski centre. The Norfolk Broads are also close by, whilst Norwich is 18 miles away, offering a cathedral and castle along with shops and restaurants.
Picturesque rolling Fens, unspoilt beaches, and pretty waterways East Anglia is a dream holiday destination. Norfolk offers beaches, saltmarshes and quaint villages whilst equally as charming are the coast and countryside of Suffolk.
Having stayed at Home to Roost summer 2019, we were so happy with the spacious, well laid out holiday cottage, that we booked again and have just enjoyed a 2 week stay here July 2020. The accommodation is absolutely IMMACULATELY clean, not a spec of dust anywhere. It is spacious inside and out with a wonderful enclosed garden, safe for kids and dogs. Equipment is all very good and we were supplied with LOTS of extra towels which was great. The location right next to the beach is gorgeous. Our one and only issue this year was to do with comfort in the bed and sofa department. Since last year, there has been a notable difference with the beds and sofa. Both beds in the downstairs bedroom felt like the mattresses might be due for a change as they are both quite lumpy In the middle and flattened out either side, with use. I felt as if I was rolling to the edge of the bed every night. Also the big curved couch in the lounge has definitely seen better days. It was a little bit flattened last year, but another year on and its really quite poor. My husband and I are fit and able and in our 40’s and it was really awkward to pull ourselves up off the couch due to the very deep indentations in each seat that you sink down into. I can imagine this might be very difficult for older, less physically fit guests. The seat padding has sunk down so much it did not feel comfy at all, which was a shame. Naturally we understand these things do wear out with guest usage over time, but I do think sofa and bed comfort are very important things for the owner to keep on top of and worth pointing out. If the mattresses and sofa issues were sorted, this would be the perfect accommodation.
Home to Roost is everything we hoped for and more! It’s really spacious, well laid out, it’s very well equipped and everything you need is provided, a bit like a home from home. Clean, modern decor and everything is well kept inside and out. Ample parking right at your front door and a large, well kept, safe garden where the sun just shone in morning through to evening. (Our 2 mini schnauzers thought they were in heaven). We ate our breakfast outside on the front area decking, with a comfy bench/table set every morning, happily people watching as a light flow of holiday makers and locals passed by on their way to a morning beach walk. Even with a few passers by, it is still a very quiet and peaceful area. The fact that the beach is literally 1 minute from the front door was a huge bonus for us. We just live for the beach and walked our dogs there 2-3 times every day. You can even hear the sea quite clearly when sitting quietly in the garden. We had one small issue with the washing machine flooding and the owner was quick to respond and fix the issue straight away and he was really helpful and chatty, keen to gain our feedback on the property for any future improvements. My 3 top ideas (and these are just the things that are important to me and more to do with my personal taste, not in any way a criticism) are: 1. There’s room for a little dressing table and mirror in the upstairs bedroom, which would be such a lovely finishing touch to that room, just for us ladies (and gents) doing your hair/ make-up to look our holiday best. 2. A toothbrush/shaver charger in one of the bathrooms would be really handy. 3. A BBQ in the garden would be a really great additional feature for us holiday makers making the most of outdoor eating in the gorgeous Norfolk sunshine. Overall I would rate this one of the best self catering accommodations we’ve ever had in many years, so much so, we’ve already booked again for our summer hols next year! See you again in 2020 Home to Roost! LM.
Nice property, well furnished. liked the two double beds in the large bedroom downstairs. Would have liked a stool, door hooks, shelf and shower shelf in the downstairs bathroom.
Needing a well earnt break from work etc we booked this place. Yes you do need to beware of the pot holes in the road accessing the house but just drive slowly. You could not be nearer to the beach, literally just over the sand dunes. Loved the wood burner, very cosy. We did have to contact the owner on a very minor issue who responded immediately and was very helpful. Fantastic to see the seals at Horsey Bay. A week of great dog walks on the beach and around the area, many thanks
The property is excellent; attractive, spacious, light, well-equipped, modern, extremely comfortable, and warm. The owner could not have been more accommodating regarding out-of-the-ordinary enquiries reference our pets (thank you again), and there was plenty of room for our large dogs. Even in January, the garden was attractive and well-maintained, and completely secure, which was great for the dogs. The beach was a couple of minutes walk away, with another lovely beach at Cart Gap, just down the road. We had trips out to see the seals at Horsey Gap, to explore villages from Bacton to Horsey, and had lunches at various extremely dog-friendly and cosy pubs and cafes nearby. There are numerous lovely villages and beaches in Cromer direction, but as we live that way, this was an opportunity to explore southwards. And we weren’t disappointed. We couldn’t have been happier or had a nicer time, in spite of snow and strong winds! Admittedly care is required on the last part of the approach via the unadopted road, but as long as the recommended route to the property is taken, it’s only a minor consideration. There was plenty of room on the drive to park both our 4x4 and our van. All in all a fabulous break was had by us all; we were sad to leave, and we will definitely be returning next year.
I have split this review into 2, the accommodation, followed by tips and reviews on the area/Norfolk. Accommodation 8/10 Firstly when I booked here I got this for what I believe was a reasonable price. The pictures looked good and the place seemed like it had character. Getting here I should have read the email a little clearer, at the end of the long drive before the estate turn left, don’t go straight on as the road is awful. I would assume this is a deterrent to stop non-locals visiting the beach. The accommodation was probably the nicest looking one from outside, you can tell it’s recently been done up. Once inside the apartment it’s really spacious and welcoming. The games room is a nice touch and the seating area in the living is really well laid out and relaxing. The log burner came in use the first night (tip) purchase wood from the local farm shop (£3.00) and kindle (£1.50). Was strange that there is an honesty box and a note saying £10 wood and £6 kindling, but either way I guess this stops people just taking it all or burning through it every night. Upstairs bedroom was good size, bathroom also nice. Didn’t get chance to use the bath but it looked good. Downstairs the bedrooms had 2 double beds in and comfortable (other review about being too low was incorrect?) . Garden area was nice and when it was sunny was good to sit and lay in the sun. The beach was great nice private (ish) and was a 1 mile walk around the beach front and estate, so was nice to take the dog around, for a run or walk in the morning. The area is in the middle of nowhere to a degree, nothing is really in walking distance. The cafe is probably a 30 min walk away. The breakfast was good, but a nightmare drive up as the road is even worse than the entrance. Would recommend if your looking for somewhere in the area or something nice and quiet. The accommodation has been done well, the WiFi and TVs in each room. Along with a good spacious modern feel. Well done to whoever worked on the renovation. Norfolk (6/10) I tried to buy a lonely planet guide as everywhere else I have been from New York to Cornwall has had one. Norfolk didn’t have one (I now know why) Highlights of the trip 1. Horsey - was fun seeing the seals so close and was a nice walk. 2. Poppy fields - great cafe, good food and well themed. His is right next to Horsey Gap (seal viewing area) 3. Wells next the sea - Massive beach, good views of the beach huts. 4. Cromer - Good town, nice crab. The baguette shop was also good here. 5. Holt - Nice market town. Very classy, good shops and coffee places etc. 6. Happisburgh - light house and failing sea defences.
Stayed here for a week in April 2018. Lovely cottage finished to a high standard with quality furniture and equipment. The only problem was the beds are like camp beds they are 3” off the floor and unless your fit and agile very hard to get in and out of, my 90 year old mother had to spend a week sleeping in a chair in the lounge. This is a real shame because the quality of the beds is amazing they are sturdy and comfy. The sofa is exactly the same you sit down and your inches off the floor. I did report this and advised the description needs updating to reflect this as I would never of booked had I of known, as far as I was aware from the description the propertyticked all boxes. I did request to the owner on our second day that maybe he could come and put some sort of blocks under the bed so my mum could get in the bed but he refused. No other issues with this property although this was a major one that ruined our break away and we left early. The estate is an unadopted road full of pot holes but if you pick the right road to drive down there are a couple of routes not quite as bad to get in and out of. Lovely area with lots of lovely local places to visit. Great dog friendly beach a stones throw away.
