Pentewan is a delightful coastal village set back from the sandy expanse of Pentewan Beach. The village shop and pub draw visitors from far and wide, while the beach is good for children. The coastal path passes through the village and as it climbs up the cliffside towards Mevagissey, the views across the bay toward Devon in the far distance are breathtaking. Good cycle paths pass close by the village, there is a great river close by for fishing enthusiasts, the Lost Gardens of Heligan are just a short walk away, and the historic and scenic Charlestown harbour is also close by. The nearby fishing village of Mevagissey offers many restaurants and fresh harbour fish, while the Eden Project is within easy reach and well worth a visit.
Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.
May Cottage is in an ideal location to get to the beach and the parking being right outside is really helpful." The cottage itself is very dark downstairs and cold and the electric heaters do not provide enough heat. The sofa in the front room is really uncomfortable so we ended up spending most of our time upstairs. The cottage is stocked with all of the necessities and we did not need to get any other household items. It was a lovely touch to have scones and milk in the fridge which was not expected! The kitchen has a washer/dryer and a dishwasher which is really handy as who wants to be washing up on holiday! The bedrooms were decorated well however had damp in them which you could see on the ceiling and smell which was not nice at all. The bathroom was lovely and was the warmest room in the house as the little radiator in there came on at times. The garden outside was large and has two areas to sit out on. The furniture on the second level has seen better days and we were constantly having to hit away wasps which we think were coming from the garden next door. It would be good to put up a catcher outside. Overall our holiday was wonderful but we would not recommend nor stay at May cottage again. If you are a bit superstitious the cottage definitely has “that feeling”. We were also told by the house next door that the cottage is up for sale so not sure what will happen to everyone’s booked holidays.
May cottage holiday hell! The main issue of our complaint was the damp, dust and smell. The rest of just adding disappointment and dissatisfaction. Both my husband and i are physically fit and healthy with no respiratory issues. During our time at May Cottage, we had to sleep with the windows open just to try and get fresh air into the property as we were both constantly coughing and wheezing in the property. As soon as we left and got back home, we felt immediately better. The cleanliness of this property is absolutely awful. The dust was terrible and deep within the home furnishings. We had to remove the couch cushions as we patted them one day as you would with any cushion and the dust that came out of them was absolutely horrendous. Thankfully we were able to utilise pillow from the bedrooms and utilise our own pillows from home. This home was a disgrace. Only a few logs upon arrival when we were told we would have a 2 day starter pack. No shower curtain - we had to make our own using cable ties. Dust and damp in every room. It took us a week to warm the property up but then had to sleep with windows open due to the poor air / dust and damp issue. The floorboard did not move in a cute "cottage" like way. They literally broke underfoot due to rot and poor maintenance. This became worse as the house warmed up. The driveway was a slippy mess. The garden was unusable. The kitchen pans were unusable. I tried to use both of the frying pans but there was years worth of grime on one of them and the other was pointless, meaning we ate out each day. We didn't want to be in the property so this wasn't an issue. The bedding was dirty in the double room. There was a loft hatch blowing bits of dirt on to the bed which we only realised days into our stay. Each room was full of cobwebs and spiders to which we had to take the hoover around and get rid of them. There was no top sheets on the bed and only thin duvets in the middle of winter. We couldn't use the extra throw blankets provided as they hadn't been washed in i don't know how long and smelled of damp. I had seen on some reviews that the cleanliness for this property was scored poorly but i just assumed that people were being picky and unfair. I can now confirm that they were not. If i would have known the extent of what we were walking into i would never have booked this trip to this cottage. It was a disgrace. Summary: Damp, damp smelling and seriously dusty. Kitchen pans unusable. Dirty bedding. Cracking floorboards. No shower curtain. No toilet flush cover just open tubes of plastic. Open adhesive, paint and grout packages in the wardrobes when there is a shed outside?! Slippy driveway covered in moss. Promise of logs for 2 days but only received less than half an open package. No bags for laundry or waste. Overall cold damp house that hasn't been lived in for time, in addition to recent bathroom installation causing extensive dust issues throughout which failed to be cleaned effectively. No correct contact details for our "point of contact" for the property until days later. Ultimately we didn't want to have to have someone come in and disturb our holiday to "re clean" or be around our possessions if we wasn't in, which we wasn't as the cottage was not a nice place to be. It took me over a week to air out our coats and to wash all of our clothes to get rid of the stale damp old smell when we returned home. Thankfully Cornwall is beautiful so we spent our days out where possible. But the nights consisted of being stuck in a dusty, damp house which made us cough and wheeze, leaving us cold at night by leaving the windows open to allow for some fresh air. Not an ideal choice "do i choose to be somewhat warm or do i choose to breathe some fresh air and care for my respiratory health?" I seriously recommend that you do not stay in this property.
