Helford is a picturesque village on the south side of the Helford River. Helford is very popular with its thatched cottages, excellent village stores and especially The Shipwrights Arms, right on the edge of the creek with its waterside terrace. Just a short walk away is Frenchmans Creek, immortalised by Daphne du Maurier. The Helford River Sailing Club is very popular and a regatta is held every August. In the summer a passenger ferry runs to Helford passage, the home of the Ferryboat Inn, and nearby to the gardens of Trebah and Glendurgan. The wildlife on the Helford River is diverse and a birdwatchers paradise.
Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.
Looks pretty in the photo but actually fronts a fast road so you enter from the back, which is an ugly collection of modern extensions with dangerous steps in need of repair, and no lighting. The single parking space fits only a medium car (Ford Focus a tight squeeze) and there is absolutely no parking anywhere nearby (we had to leave our other car about a mile away in a playground car park all week, very kindly suggested by a neighbour). Bed linen and towels are of good quality (though rather oddly a massively thick and heavy duvet on the master bed in July!?). Bathrooms are very much in need of an overhaul which might also usefully remove the stray hairs missed by the cleaner and splash out on some new toilet rolls instead of half-used ones! Some people might consider soap in the bathrooms a nice touch too, or even a box of tissues? Kitchen equipment fairly basic, budget appliances but functional and an eclectic mix of crockery and cutlery. Good layout for a family with a room for storing beach stuff etc and enclosed garden. Fairly convenient location for exploring the area, plenty of things to do and places to eat and good for helicopter and military jet spotting as near Culdrose base! Has the feel of a well-used holiday home let out when not in use, with no attention having been paid to the rental experience for guests. There is nothing luxurious about it, it is functional, and should be priced and described as such. (I can see that some people might be happier with this than me, I do value a bit of pampering on holiday.) For safety of guests, lighting is needed for the approach through the back garden and loose steps need repairing.
Not our usual standard and disappointing considering the cost. It is near a road with persistent traffic so not exactly peaceful and in need of decorating throughout. Not spacious enough downstairs - more like a townhouse. Compared to a similar property in the area and this is a much smaller footprint and tired in comparison.
