The market town of Ulverston offers a street market every Thursday and Saturday, a number of events throughout the year, the only Laurel and Hardy museum in the world, shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs, a cinema and a leisure centre. The Furness Coast is nearby and boasts sandy beaches and birdwatching, and the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Lakes Windermere and Coniston and popular Birkrigg Common are within reach.
Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
We had booked Ellie's Lodge via Herdwickcottages. 3 weeks later we contacted the agency to check everything. But to our shock received a message that the owner was cancelling our booking without a good reason. The owner clearly couldn't care less that we're a family group making international travel plans. The host is clearly unreliable. You've been warned!
The house has good amenities with a large modern kitchen, lots of rooms and space. However we couldn’t turn the radiators or hot tub on. When we tried ringing the numbers left in reception - one of the numbers had too few digits and the other went to someone’s mobile who no longer worked there. We had to wait until morning to go and find someone in the adjacent garden centre (which is part of the same business) so had a night without heating. The back garden is nice but the rest of the surroundings of the house are a large car park, garden centre and a main road, not as picturesque as many places you’ll find in the lakes. Another thing to watch out for - the cleaners on our departure day we’re vicious. We were only a few minutes late leaving and they clearly were in no rush to get cleaning as they gathered in the kitchen drinking hot drinks and gossiping. When we entered the kitchen they fell silent and stared at us. Then they threatened to throw away our shoes that were still unpacked. Left me feeling very sour!
What a fantastic weekend we have had at Ellie’s Lodge. The house is immaculate with great facilities including a sauna, hot tub, games room and bar, perfect for large groups. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and had the best nights sleep in the extremely comfortable beds. Ulverston centre is just a short walk away and is lovely and quaint. We will be staying again, thank you!
Thank you so much for a fantastic weekend, the house is amazing!! Great for such a big party. The rooms were great and we had everything we needed! Lovely hot tub and sauna. Great facilities. Great location l, close to shops and pubs! X
Just arrived home from a week in Ellie’s Lodge, & had a great time. The directions/postcode do not take you to the house & we all had problems finding the house. It is situated in the grounds of a garden centre so ensured lots of parking - we had 10 cars. The ground floor had good sized kitchen with plenty of appliances & lots of cups/plates/glasses except shortage of teaspoons! Large room with no tv for quiet or we used as playroom in daytime. Bar area with pool table & darts was used daily, also table tennis & sauna & large sitting room with tv. Outdoor hot tub was excellent & garden for barbecues in summer. 2 ground floor bedrooms & 2 extra toilets & shower were useful. Upstairs the bedrooms were all Ensuite & newly done! Family room & doubles & twins. We all agreed the house ticked all the boxes & would definitely return
Recently returned from a long weekend staying with family at Ellie's Lodge to celebrate our Ruby Wedding anniversary. Everyone was blown away by the quality of the accommodation; standard of decor; spaciousness; comfort & cleanliness. Our youngest guest is 9 months; our eldest 89 & both were equally well catered for. There is one double, ground floor, wet room adapted for a disabled/wheelchair user & another with 2 singles & a walk in shower. Everyone commented on the quality of the beds & no-one expressed any problems with their showers (so the issue faced by an earlier guest didn't apply by end March 2019). So much to keep everyone occupied - hot tub; table tennis; sauna; darts; pool table & the bar is great fun. The Lodge is situated opposite a small Garden Centre and shares central car parking facilities but that didn't worry us at all. In fact it means there's plenty of parking for all the guests. There's a lovely florist there too. We had an on-line grocery order delivered from Tesco in Barrow on the Friday evening & it worked a treat. There are two large, American style, fridge freezers; 2 dish washers & 2 electric hobs. Lots of fluffy white towels & tea towels provided along with loads of glasses, crockery & cutlery. Just a couple of improvements that could easily be made to make future guests even more comfortable - somewhere in showers to put soap/shampoo/shower gel etc; instructions for re-cycling & hobs & shower mats in the walk in showers which have a very smooth (slippery) ceramic surface. Oh - & if you fancy visiting the Laurel & Hardy Museum in Ulverston - ignore what it says on their website about being fully booked & it not being possible to visit without booking in advance - several of us went & paid on the day & it was virtually empty (bizarre marketing!). All in all, very happy to recommend this stunningly stylish & comfortable venue.
Stayed over Christmas and Boxing Day with a group of friends and workmates. It was the first time being let so you would expect a few hiccups but everything was sorted when we needed. The property is large and when you are staying for a few days it really helps , everyone can enjoy different activities without feeling cramped . The bar and leisure area is fantastic as is the open space kitchen and living area. Having kids with was they weren't disturbed by noise as you can pick bedrooms away from the buzz. Overall a memorable experience and a perfect place for a family gathering or group holiday, the place will keep you entertained if you don't want to explore too much beautiful Ulverston.
We loved it! Perfect place to go away with ALL the family. Beautifully done up. Very central to many great sight seeing locations!
I stay here over the Christmas. Not very good place. Place has smell of damp and showers very poor quality. The smell very bad when water drains in the shower. The area round house is very scruffy and not very nice. Some toilets didn't work properly. TV damaged. I would not recommend this home. Very smelly place. Damp very bad.
