A charming Devonshire village Cockington boasts narrow country lanes lined by traditional thatched cottages. In the village centre and you will find the Tudor manor house, Cockington Court and its acreage, featuring beautifully restored lakes and points of interest such as the Gamekeepers Cottage. The Manor is now a craft centre offering the opportunity for visitors to watch craftspeople at work and to purchase any number of handmade gifts. If you needed any more reasons to visit this quaint village, it would be its proximity to the bustling capital of the English Riviera, Torquay. Torquay is a busy seaside resort offering visitors everything from fine dining, sailing and water sports, a popular theatre scene, as well as vibrant nightlife.
Devon, with its quiet country lanes, patchwork of lush green fields and sleepy villages is not to be missed. Stately home lovers will be spoiled and why not finish with a scrumptious Devonshire cream tea?
The owner did not inform us or Sykes that flood defences were being installed during our weeks holiday. Would not stay again.
Cockington as many know is a beautiful village Location close to most Devon seaside towns. Some of my review is going to be negative but I have spoken to Sykes about the issues and they have promised to sort it. We had difficulty finding the cottage, the sign is up on a wall when it would be better to be on the gate like the other cottages within the small complex. Parking was brilliant to have. It really isnt wheelchair access because before you get into the cottage there are a couple of steps. Key was in a key safe, great idea :) The kitchen was fully equipped, no need to worry about can openers etc! The dishwasher didnt work, they left you with a dishwasher tablet, I don’t think they knew it didnt work! The microwave smelt of curry the whole week lol, worked well tho. Wow to a washing machine and tumble dryer in the utility room, I went home with no washing which was fantastic. The downstairs shower room was beautiful, I didnt use the shower but my partner said it was fine. The downstairs bedroom was the only room that smelled of dog. The rest of the cottage didnt. The living room had Sky Q or something which was great, all the bedrooms had Netflix and they all worked. The upstairs bathroom has a sloping ceiling which I banged my head on lol, nice deep bath which was welcome after a long day walking the dog on the beaches of Devon. Beds comfy with lovely clean sheets. The garden is dog friendly unless you have a dog that jumps.....ours doesn’t so no issue for us. We walked up to the Drum pub but found it fairly expensive so didnt eat there. I have previously had an amazing cream tea at the tea shop in Cockington but boy oh boy it gets busy. You can walk to the nearest beach in 15-20 minutes, turn left out of the main gate, follow the road for a couple of minutes and you will see a gate, through there you will be able to walk alongside the road nearly all the way to the beach....lovely because our dog could go off lead. Again I must say that Sykes listened to all my issues and hopefully they will have been put right :)
The cottage is situated in the lovely village of Cockington just outside of Torquay, the village is a tourist attraction due to all the thatched roof cottages. Meadow Thatch is situated just off the centre of the village and set in it's own grounds with enclosed gardens front and rear, which was ideal for the dogs. The stream which runs through the gardens and past the house is well fenced so we had no issues. The cottage is 3 bedroomed with a bedroom, toilet and shower room on the ground floor, which is ideal if you have mobility issues, not sure if wheelchair would fit through internal doors and the kitchen has one step up. Very clean throughout and as we had two dogs there was plenty of room. The drum bar restaurant is approximately a mile from the cottage and as there is off street parking at the cottage this would be a bonus in peak season as parking in the village and at Drum are minimal.Would highly recommender families or couples with or without dogs.
We had a fabulous holiday in this beautiful thatched cottage. The cottage was modern, spacious, tastefully decorated and was immaculate. We took our dog with us and we were pleased to find safe enclosed gardens at the front and rear of the property. Cockington village is really beautiful and relaxing and everyone was very friendly. Highly recommended, we will definitely be returning.
