Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
Granary Nook is central to everything in Windermere. We liked the fact that once you park your car there is no need to drive again if you dont want to. The cottage is well equipped and really is a home from home. The enclosed outside courtyard was excellent for our dog.
We love this cottage it got everything you need it’s in a courtyard area very private and quiet but also very close to all amenities in the town. There is plenty places to eat and drink if you like to eat out overall it’s perfect .. already booked again .
My husband and I came to stay here with our little mini Dachshund. This is the 1st time we have booked a holiday like this, so I was obviously a little anxious. I cannot thank the owners enough! The cottage has everything you could want, we thought the little welcome tray was a lovely touch. The location was superb, right in the centre within walking distance to all the restaurants etc, Co op next door, and a sainsbury's around the corner. Everything spotless clean, an abundance of towels & Crockery. There is only 1 cottage we would return to, and this is it!
A real home from home! The bedrooms are decorated beautifully, a large bathroom and a good size kitchen with all cooking facilities and a dishwasher. The whole cottage was very clean and there is a large courtyard area for sitting out with the dogs. The cottage is in central Windermere, the location was spot on. There are lots of bars/ pubs/ reastaurants close by and little local shops to walk around. 20-30 mins walk downhill is Bowness and ‘the lakes’, where there’s even more little shops to look around, boat cruises, boat hires and large fields and walks for dogs. 5-10 mins uphill is a nice walk up to Orrest Head, an up-hill walk that overlooks the lakes, beautiful (and my 4 year old managed the walk so not too difficult). The whole family enjoyed it, 5 adults, a child and 2 large dogs, and we can’t wait to visit again, I only wish we’d have stayed longer this time. Thank you for a great stay!! Highly recommended.
We’ve just got back from a lovely weekend at the Granary Nook. Set slightly back off the town centre but so quiet you’d think you were miles away from it. Plenty of restaurants and bars (we frequented the Pig). Lake Windermere was only a 20 mins walk and it’s downhill to reach it. Boat rides aplenty at reasonable prices, we took the blue tour (very good). The nook itself Is very nicely decorated throughout with a quirky poppy theme in the kitchen area. The living area is large enough without getting under each other’s feet. We didn’t get to sit in the garden mainly due to the time of year and also no key for the back door. All in all a very pleasant and well maintained property.
We stayed for a long weekend at the beginning of November with our son and parents. Granary Nook is a comfortable, centrally located little gem. House was clean and well equipped. Very convenient for restaurants, shops and pubs in Windermere village. Ideal for a family with children. Pet friendly. Would recommend.
A super location right in the center of Windermere, it was great to be able to forget about the car for a few days. We stayed for a weekend to enable us to discover more about the south lakes. Granary Nook was so cosy and has a very efficient heating system. The house is extremely well decorated and very well equipped, especially the kitchen. We ate in on the Saturday night and were able to cook and serve up a meal very easily. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable and the shower works a treat. We just loved it and we shall certainly be booking again.
Stayed here for four nights early January. One adult and 3 children. Cosy warm and welcoming. Beds amazingly comfy and older two loved sleeping in the upper bedroom. Everything you need for a family break washing machine toys games dvd. Fab location lovely places to eat and drink close by. We loved fodder had great cocktails too. Thanks anne and dave xx
I visited the cottage for a weekend stay with my wife, two children and dog. The cottage is well presented with a homely feel. The living room is spacious with a traditional cottage style kitchen with all the modern amenities. The three bedrooms are spacious and well decorated with very comfy beds. The bathroom is large and again decorated to a good standard which is in keeping with the cottage and benefits from a nice shower and a boiler system that fills the bath with hot water. To the rear of the cottage is a good size courtyard. The cottage is situated in the centre of Windermere (just off the main high street) which is excellent should you wish to visit the town or local towns such as Bowness or Ambleside or spend time walking the hills of the Lake District. Within Windermere town centre is a wide range of shops and boutiques with a nice children's park a short walk from the cottage. The cottage is warm and comfy and we will definitely be returning having thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Just spent three days at the cottage with my husband and friends and our two little dogs.have stayed there before the cottage has had abit of a make over and is even better. its a very good base to stay in windermere for the lakes.the cottage is always warm and cosy and has everything you need.lookind forward to going again
We have just spent a magical few days at Granary Nook. I believe it has new owners and they have clearly spent a lot of money modernizing the place. Its location provided the perfect base for exploring the town of Windermere & surrounding area. The enclosed courtyard at the back was ideal for evening drinks and provided a safe area for the kids to play in. We will definitely be going back.
We went up for the weekend as a family and really loved the house on 3 floors with 3 bedrooms, a spacious bathroom and a newly refurbished kitchen in Central Windermere. It was so convenient to be able to park on street (with house permit) outside and visit the local shops/ restaurants around the corner. Also you are within easy walking distance of Bowness and 5-10 minutes drive from lots of attractions
I do not think you could get a better location to stay in Windermere than Granary Nook. It is a quaint cottage style property tucked away in a quiet little corner like some sort of a secret hideaway, but step out of the front door & to the end of the little passageway & you are in the hub of Windermere, surrounded by cafe's bars, restaurant, souvenir shops & more. The house is furnished to a high standard & carpets & much of the furniture seemed brand span king new & in immaculate condition. It was spacious enough to comfortable house 4 adults, a lively child & a pet. We loved our stay & will definitely be re-visiting Granary Nook.
This was not our first choice as the owner of our original booking took the property off the market 2 weeks prior to our visit, so we had to make the best of what was available. The cottage needs a face lift. The stair carpet is worn on the edges and is slippy under foot in parts, I slipped fell off the bottom stair and sprained my ankle. The cottage was freezing and we managed eventually to alter the timer but there were no instructions left. The bathroom is on the third floor so no good for anyone with walking difficulties. On a positive note the beds were very comfy, the cottage is located in the centre of Winderemere and is very handy for all the shops and bars. This cottage could be wonderful if the owners gave it it a makeover.
We've recently returned from a short stay in Granary Nook, Windermere. had a lovely stay. The accommodations best assets is its location. Just off the main high street which has plenty of bars restaurants and grocery stores. The cottage it's self was perfectly adequate for our stay. Very quaint and although the word Nook is in the title it was surprisingly spacious. 2 double rooms and a single. lounge, kitchen and 1 bathroom all over 3 stories. Also a little enclosed courtyard which was perfect for letting the dog out. Yes they also take dogs so our 4 legged friend also enjoyed her stay. Although the courtyard has no grass, there is a park area very close to the house so it was no bother to pop here along there. Granary Nook is just down a little walkway from the street and was very quiet. We heard nothing from the main road or any neighbours. I will say the it could do with a little spruce up. There is some damp in a few rooms. I know this is an very old property so I guess it's an awkward problem to solve. It is nothing serious though and didn't bother us, we were just glad to be able to take our dog away. And in a couple of areas the carpets are stained or damaged. Dogs must stay on the ground floor which is the entry, kitchen and lounge. This was fine for our dog as she's not aloud upstairs at home. There is a parking permit provided and we always managed to find a parking space relatively close to the property. As we had quite a drive to get up to Windermere we arrived very late. About 1am. The rental company is located in Windermere town and we were able to pick up our keys from their lockbox. They could not though leave the parking permit in the lock box as they said another guest might take it!!! This I couldn't understand, They should just put it in a larger sealed envelope with the house keys. We had to get up early the next morning to go and collect the permit from their office in business hours. I didn't have a good sleep the first night as I was worried the traffic warden would come along early and put a parking ticket on the car. Just a little thing but please issue permit with keys or leave permit in the property as we requested. When we arrived they property lights were on as was the heating so that was welcoming. We did struggle to find a comfortable heat though. Most of the time it was just way to warm inside, I dare say if we had stayed a couple of days longer we would have found what setting to put the thermostat on. No worries about being chilly. One other thing, We were told to find the bakery and the walkway is beside that however the bakery has gone and is now just an empty shop so we drove around a couple of times before we realised this. We had a very pleasant stay and would be happy enough to return sometime in the future.
The service we received was fantastic. The cottage was welcoming and quaint, although a hinge on the kitchen door was loose and we had to tighten the screws to stop the door falling off. The rooms were lovely and the shower worked perfectly as well as the heating for those cold wet days. The garden is small, btu seating is plentiful, but small dogs like my little Yorkie could get under the gate if left unattended so make sure to be outside with your dog at all times. That said, he really enjoyed his first holiday :-) The cottage is centrally located in windermere, seconds away from the Co-op and other local shops for those essentials. Plenty of cafes and takeaways nearby and a lovely park for early morning dog walks along the road. We really enjoyed walking up Orrest Head - the start of it being only 5 minutes away from the cottage. We had no problems with finding a parking space using the permit. There were builders working on a building very close by, but we are early birds so their noise didn't effect us at all. One thing I would say is that the guest folder containing info about the cottage is out of date, the inventory dated back to 2008!!! An up to date version would have been good.
No hand rails on the stairs beds very lumpy did not sleep very well
We chose this property and location for the public transport links, you can get almost everywhere by bus(so no need to worry about not having a car), its just a short walk down to bowness on windermere, for the ferries/boats, the property it self is lovely and quiet, more than enough room for 5 people and a pet, the cleanliness is up there with the best, parking can be a pain but not a problem, there is 2 mini supermarkets within a minutes walk, a butchers and a supermarket about 5-10 mins up the road. So if you plan going to the lake district by public transport this is the property for you
Granary Nook was exactly what we were looking for. The cottage it's self was small but perfectly formed, very well equipped. The only disappointment was it being up a narrow alley, opposite a funeral directors and beside a current renovation project ( where the workers swore like troopers all day) this aside, Granary Nook was central for walks, days out, shops, restraunts and pubs. We would certainly stay again.
Granary Nook is very close by everything,it is within 100 meters of 4 takeaways,3 pubs,a bank, post office corner shop and many coffee shops.Parking with the permit is very convenient the cottage is on 3 floors so anyone with stair problems should think again.Only a mile to Bowness 500 meters to Orsthead hill and 400 meters from the train station the only downside for me was the lack of a view as the building is surrounded by other property but all in all a good clean holiday cottage.
Great location and convenient for all amenities. House was very cosy but was let down by building work going on next door. The next door bakery was an irresistable temptation and the funeral parlour behind meant very quiet neighbours! Didnt like the fact there were no recycling facilities at the cottage, everything had to go in the one bin-surely everyone recycles these days and doesnt mind doing it on holiday? great for our family though and we would return-there was no cot when we arrived but the people in the office sorted this out very quickly
Would not use Cottage Holiday Group the booking agent again. For 2 reasons: Car parking in the house details clearly stated that the pass provided was for 'all car parks'. We parked the the nearest car park with the pass provided and get a £30 fine! They would not entertain that it had been their negligence that had caused the situation. Also we left a book in the house. They wanted a £10 'admin charge' above the postage to return it! Have been going to lake district twice a year for 30 years - but will not use these jokers again.
A very good central location for all the joys of the lakes, good shopping area and very handy for the fells. Had a very enjoyable stay.
Upon arriving @ the office in windermere to pick the keys up, the staff were pleasant & cheerful & most helpful.Upon entering the cottage we noticed a musty smell,on 1st inspection the cottage decor looked very tired, kitchen was abit adhoc affair, the cupboad doors were all out of alignment did not open correctly, the cutlery draw fell out when opened, the frdge-freezer was very dated. On inspecting the bedrooms the single bedroom on the top floor had extensively water damaged ceiling which continued down the walls behind the wardrobe in the form of milldew & mould this was also visible in the 1st floor bedroom,we realised we could not stop there as we had an infant in our party who is asthmatic this was the reason for booking a 3 bed cottage.I returned to the office & expressed my concerns, staff in the office were most helpful & tried their best to rectify the situation or come up with a compromise. This they did by offering us accomodation in smaller superior accomodatin Maple Leaf cottage. This we were grateful for as the other option was to go back home.I would have an easier time writing a favourable review on Maple Leaf cottage.Although the staff were very helpful & could not fault them, I feel that the property (Granary Nook) should have been inspected more thoroughly in advance of our arrival as the problems it had weren't an overnight thing & on perusal of the visitors we were not alone together with the missing pages.
Although the cottage is tucked away up a driveway out of the way of the hustle and bustle of Windermere Town it is still in the thick of it with lots of bars and shops on your doorstep to choose from. It is only one mile away from Bowness on Windermere so easily within walking distance of Lake Windermere (about 20 minutes). The cottage was spacious, comfortable and clean and felt like a home from home with everything you would need. We would definitely stay again. Parking the car was a bit tricky but once we had found a space, due to the location of the cottage, we didn't need to move it and only used it once anyway. All in all a great place to stay.
Granary Nook is a quaint cottage. With 5 people it is cosy and because it rained a lot we did get to know each other well. There are plenty of games and jigsaw puzzles in the cottage to while away the time when it is pouring. Being right by the Co-Op it make cooking and shopping very easy. Cooking utensils left a bit to be desired. The enclosed garden was a bit of a let down as it was also shared by neighbours so it was not possible to leave things outside. That would have been good to know beforehand. And being up an alley we were woken early by people moving bins and the bakery. Because of being in the centre of Windermere it was about a 15-20 min walk before getting to somewhere where the dog could be let off, though we did find a park about 5 mins away that worked well for quick walks. We would advise reading the parking permit carefully too as we finished up with a £25 parking fine for parking where we thought we were allowed to be. Unfortunately it was on the last day we didn't check whether it was us or the instructions in the cottage that were wrong, and even though we have emailed the company have not had a reply. But even so it was a lovely cute cottage and we all had a great time there.
This cottage is hidden up a small alley, next to a superb bakers and a chapel of rest. It covers 3 floors and the bathroom is on the top floor, this caused my wife some problems when rushing to the toilet but if you are fit it's terific. Parking is a nightmare if you go in busy period even though you are given a free parking voucher, just volume of cars. Decent stroll down to Bowness but worth the walk. Lack of TV in the bedrooms is a bit of a let down. Overall the experience of the Lakes is among the best in the country
A nice cottage tucked away which was clean and comfortable. Great comments in the visitors book about the funeral directors
Cottage was in a great location - in the heart of Windermere, which meant we could go out for dinner easily! It's pet friendly but also nicely furnished, and the enclosed garden was brilliant for the dog. It was exactly what we were looking for.
