Westcliff, Newlyn

Westcliff sits in a prime waterfront location and has unrivalled views over Newlyn?s magnificent harbour and the stunning coastline at Mount?s Bay. Newlyn sits in south-west Cornwall, between the picturesque fishing village of Mousehole and the historic port of Penzance. Set in an elevated harbour side position, guests can admire uninterrupted views to the iconic castle topped island of St Michael?s Mount and as far as the Lizard Peninsula on clear days. The cottage provides accommodation for up to four adults and two children with three bedrooms, one bathroom and one WC. There is a sitting room on the first floor, where time can be spent watching the changing skies and tides and the comings and goings of the fishing boats as they land their catch, and a kitchen dining room on the ground floor. To the rear is an enclosed courtyard garden with garden furniture and a barbecue. Pay and display parking available within a 5 minute walk. Westcliff is ideal for friends and families for breaks at any time of year.

Location Details

Nestled next to Penzance, and although still a quaint village in its own right, Newlyn is actually the third largest fishing port in England, and an important Port of Refuge for all sea baring craft. It is unusual in that visitors can still watch the landing and auctioning of fish at the market, as many families have for centuries before. This Cornish village is clustered around the harbour, with its historic 800 year old quay (the Mayflower actually left for America from this quay, not Plymouth) curling around a few small boats on the western side. Famous for the Newlyn school of Art and Newlyn Copper, the Cornwall Coastal Path passes through the village, as does the level Mousehole to Marazion cycle path. An abundance of wildlife and flora can be enjoyed along both, with basking sharks, dolphins and grey seals often seen. The Cornish coast is renowned for surfing, and Penwith offers some splendid beaches on which to enjoy this sport as well as surf fishing for sea bass. Mounts Bay also offers a wealth of opportunity for watersports enthusiasts as well as giving visitors an opportunity to relax and unwind in beautiful surroundings.

A wonderful place to stay. The views over the harbour were fantastic and a great place to stay to visit other places. The house is a home from home with everything you could want. I loved to sit in the chair overlooking the harbour watching the boats. We did some great walks from just along the coast to Mousehole or Penzance or across to St Ives. Thank you for a great week.

Wow, what can I say. This cottage is like a home from home. The views across Newlyn Harbour from the living room are beautiful. Great location and close to amenities, cute local pubs and fresh fish shops. The kitchen is fully kitted out. Everything you could possibly think of or will need is in the kitchen- including a nespresso machine! The living room has books, games and dvds. Perfect for a drizzly day or chilly evening . The beds are very comfortable and the downstairs bedroom also has great views of the bay. We have had a magical stay and can’t wait to come back. This cottage really is a gem of Newlyn. Thanks for a lovely stay!

We were lucky enough to find out about Westcliff through friends and stayed for a week in August. We are a family of four with an 11 and 14 year old, and as soon as you walk through the front door you feel at home. The cottage has three good sized bedrooms which meant everyone had a space of their own. The kitchen is well equipped with plenty of modern appliances including a nespresso machine. The living room on the first floor is huge with the most amazing view over the harbour. The courtyard outside has a bbq and plenty of space to store all of our bikes! Another great feature is the high speed internet, which made it possible for me to conduct a couple of Teams meetings with work. Newlyn is a great spot to be in, you can walk along the promenade to Penzance, or drive a mile down the road to Mousehole. We spent most mornings learning to surf in St Ives, which is only a short drive away. Newlyn has some great places to eat but our family favourite was the Mackeral Sky seafood tapas. We’ve already booked 2 weeks next year and would not hesitate to recommend this amazing place to others.

We have just turned the key to leave Westcliff and we will definitely return. Oliver contacted me before arrival and was incredibly kind, when I could not get a dinner reservation for my Birthday he sorted one out. The house itself is packed with thoughtfulness, the kitchen is completely equipped and I wandered down to the fish shop and cooked up the freshest spaghetti vongole. When we arrived it was grey but the kids were delighted with the bunk beds and books and kept themselves occupied whilst I unpacked. There are games and jigsaws for the evenings and we enjoyed nightly games of scrabble over a glass of vino. The blue chair rapidly became mummies chair as I woke early to watch the fishing boats coming and going with my cuppa. There is a short walk to a hidden cove where the locals swim from and a seal is a regular visitor. The second night whilst playing in the water with my daughter he decided to join us... totally amazing experience. The local ice cream shop sells the most delicious fresh ice-cream and is owned by a relative of Helen Glover whom we met swimming with her husband Steve Backshall. Such a welcoming and friendly house and town. Unfortunately the Jubilee Pool was closed and we could not get tickets for Saint Michaels Mount but it means that we left and can’t wait to come back. Thank you Oliver

My husband and I just got back from a perfect week in this wonderful cottage. The owners have made every effort to make your holiday experience perfect; everything you need and more is on hand - it’s like a wonderful home from home. Watching from the lounge as the boats come and go from Newlyn Harbour was so relaxing each evening, a real treat. My daughter and her two toddlers joined us for a couple of days and they also had a ball. There was even a box under the bunk beds with books and puzzles just for their age groups (plenty of other games, videos etc for older kids for rainy days too). Newlyn itself is a fab base for some beautiful beaches, particularly Sennan and Marazion which are very close by. The town has some wonderful eateries, The Tolcarne Inn and Mackeral Sky were amazing. There is also a fantastic cheese shop and Jelberts was a favourite for ice cream for the kids. All in all this was a wonderful, restful week and we will definitely be returning to Westcliff again, hopefully before too long!

My family and I had a wonderful holiday at Westcliff. My husband and I loved it, my three year old daughter loved it, and my gobby little Schnauzer particularly loved watching the comings and goings of the locals and the fishing boats out of the living room windows and having a jolly good, friendly bark at them whenever he got the chance! The cottage itself has great charm and character and is presented beautifully with every attention to detail. It is situated right on the harbour side in the fishing port of Newlyn with glorious views from the living room and master bedroom windows. Newlyn offers plenty of lovely sights, as well as places to eat and drink, and Mousehole and Penzance are both easily walkable, or there are regular buses that run between the two. We also had a brilliant boat trip on the Mermaid II from Penzance, plus trips to the beaches at Marazion and Porthcurno, and crabbing off the old Newlyn quay opposite the cottage was a particular favourite of all of us. We will absolutely return to Westcliff, hopefully in the near future.

Beautiful cottage, equipped with everything we needed and more. Stunning views of the harbour, watching the sunset in the evening with a glass of wine is just perfect. Not a touristy part of Cornwall which is a big bonus for us. Lots to see and do close by and further out. A great family holiday.
