The village of Cowling sits in the Pennine Hills, just seven miles from the market town of Skipton. A thriving village, built along a main high street with stone-built, terraced houses set alongside the mills of a bygone age. The nearby Quaker village of Lothersdale was, at one time, home to Charlotte Bronte who modelled Gateshead Hall in Jane Eyre on Stone Gappe House where she was governess. Today many visitors passing through the village are walkers, on their way along the Pennine Way on the stretch from Cowling to Gargrave. There's the large retail outlet of Boundary Mills, just six miles away, a must for lovers of shoping, and Skipton, known as 'The Gateway to the Dales' is nearby. Skipton is a lovely old market town with much to interest the enthusiastic visitor, boasting an ancient castle open to the public, a beautiful old parish church and a colourful market occupying the cobbled setts each side of the high street.
From heather-clad moors and limestone scars, to market towns and the steady pace of country life - the sublime Dales await you! Where else in Britain is it as satisfying to sit and do nothing as it is to explore the numerous pursuits on offer?
We had a great stay at Baywood Cottage which is a surprisingly spacious cottage with good size rooms and a very spacious hall. It's very well equipped and well maintained place to stay to visit this part of the Dales. The icing on the cake though is the location and the views, with good walks from the cottage as well.
Baywood cottage is one of the most comfortable cottages we have stayed in. It was very well equipped & many tasty goodies were supplied along with beautiful flowers in the lounge & our bedroom. Kath & Mark were lovely hosts & were there if you needed them but not at all intrusive. We thought everything about the cottage was exceptional. It was so comfy (especially the huge bed!) & the views were amazing. If we visit that part of Yorkshire again we would definitely want to return to Baywood Cottage.
This is a very nice cottage. Well equipped kitchen, plenty of utensils and crockery. The super king bed is very comfy, just what’s needed after a days walking. Mark and Kath left us some eggs, along with some cakes, biscuits, tea, coffee, sugar and milk, so a nice welcome. We also had a further 6 eggs during the week from their own chickens so very fresh. The cottage has lovely views and you can watch the sunset from the living room window. Large bathroom with large shower cubicle. The weather was lovely so no need for us to use the wood burner. There are plenty of walks around the area and a nice one was directly from the cottage up to the Pinnacle and Tower on the hill behind. Very quiet and peaceful. Would definitely recommend.
We've just returned from Baywood Cottage after a lovely relaxing week. The cottage is spacious, comfortable and spotless, and is equipped with everything you could need. The owners, Kath and Mark, are so friendly and helpful. It's in a fantastic spot, a bit higher up than Cowling itself, with beautiful views from every window. Kath's horses are outside your bedroom window, and there are fantastic sunsets to be seen from the lounge window. It's very peaceful - not a sound at night and lovely comfortable beds. You can also watch the wildlife - we saw a little owl and a hare. The Dog & Gun pub is about a mile away, with a great menu and reasonable prices. If you're looking for a peaceful and relaxing week, this is definitely it!
