Both my husband and I travel extensively each year, and one week each year we book a cottage to take my elderly mother in law on a holiday. This year, booking Old Codgers Cottage through Sykes Cottages was a HUGE mistake! I can only assume that some of the ositive reviews praising the cottage have been posted by the owner and friends and family as it is NOT the cottage that we stayed in, as our photos will show! We have also noted that a number of bad reviews have been removed?! Firstly the parking permit is useless as we were only able to park outside the cottage once all week as other permit holders were permanently parked on the street! The cottage was filthy! Filthy windows, filthy garden furniture, filthy toilet brush & holder, stained pillows and divets, rusted microwave, rusted and dirty pans, broken window blind, broken wardrobe, the list goes on and on ..... The plates were child sized and there weren't enough pans for cooking, there were only two grotty table placement mats available when the cottage sleeps four. Nowhere to hang wet coats either! The worst part of our stay was the mattresses! They were rock hard and really uncomfortable as reported by previous guests and my poor mother in law aged 79 was so uncomfortable and barely slept all week! We complained to Sykes Cottages and requested compensation towards another holiday, to be informed that even though we booked through Sykes Cottages, they are NOT liable or responsible for anything to do with our stay at the cottage as our contract is with the cottage owner?! The cottage owner has cited wear and tear and dismissed our complaint outright! The owner states that no other tenant had raised issues with Old Codgers Cottage, completely untrue as we found on investigation, however, interestingly most of these negative reviews appear to have disappeared?! We though by booking through a company such as Sykes we would have some come back if things went wrong BUT apparently NOT! Currently Sykes have advised that shud we wish to pursue things further, we will have to involve a third party which we assume is legal representation to communicate with the cottage owner! Look at the photos, photos don't lie. Sykes are still letting this property despite my complaint and other complaints and the cottage also appears on other booking sites. It is clear that the owner is only interested in the money generated from the cottage and couldn't care less about the comfort or quality of stay of guests! It's looking like a trip to the small claims Court for recompense as bad landlords should not be allowed to exploit holiday makers by overcharging for sub standard properties and facilities! If there was an option for zero star that's what we would award! Shocking property & customer service!
