The Smithy, Broadwell is a true Cotswolds gem and one which we feel offers a wonderful and authentic experience in a location that is hard to beat. As the name would suggest, The Smithy was many, many years ago the home to the village blacksmith, with his workshop tucked next door, a cottage packed with history and well known by the older locals! In recent years the house has undergone a wholesale update but pleasingly the house retains much of the original period charm including the beams, mullion windows and a flagstone floor. In fact the old workshop barn next door hasn't been touched, so part of the original history remains intact. Otherwise, the building has been transformed into a beautiful and stunning home for up to 6 people, with all the modern facilities you'd expect. Downstairs is an attractive kitchen/ diner and cosy Living Room , while upstairs across two floors are three good sized bedrooms and two modern bathrooms. Outside is a huge garden too and altogether this top-notch cottage has plenty to offer. All this in a wonderful village that also has an excellent pub too (about 4 mins walk!) We feel this is an exceptional holiday cottage, ideal for families or small groups - in a location that is perfect for enjoying the best of the Cotswolds region.

A charming Cotswold Village in Gloucestershire, Broadwell is a delightful retreat home to a traditional village pub and picturesque stone houses. Just 1.5 miles from the ancient market town of Stow-on-the-Wold, everything you need during your stay is within easy reach including supermarkets, shops, pubs and restaurants. Superb walks along the River Evenlode are close by, and there are cycling routes and bridleways throughout the AONB. A short drive will take you to popular Cotswold destinations including Broadway, Bourton-on-the-Water, Shakespeare’s birthplace Stratford-Upon-Avon and Moreton-in-Marsh. Further afield, the regency spa town Cheltenham can be reached in less than an hour.

Reviews

Love this place! Quaint little cottage in an beautiful village. Plenty of parking, even if it was on the grassed area next to the road. Can't wait to see how the barn restoration works will look once completed. Will definitely be back again!!

- [ ] The Smithy is quaint and a great base for exploring. It’s above average and below very good so technically 3.5 stars. Beautiful top floor bathroom has a roll too bath - needs a shower. There is a shower attachment but no shower screen or curtain so impossible to have a shower without soaking the entire room, and I did and then spent 15 minutes mopping up. A design flaw easily remedied. The main bathroom needs an extractor fan running as it gets very steamed up quickly. Lovely big garden and big family table outside but no sun umbrella or chair cushions so uncomfortable and almost unusable when the suns out. Also there is an overpowering smell from the oil for the boiler, it’s off putting when sitting in the garden. Not sure if it’s leaking or this is normal. The property could benefit from a decent guide - history of the property, how things work (especially the complex tv Sat box system that took about 25 minutes to work out). No info on where to go, local pubs etc so just lacks the personal touch. There is a file with a few laminated A4 sheets talking about the bins and when you leave - just needs an update and padding out - local walks etc - we found a walk to the Pub at Oddington and took the weekly bus to Chipping Norton to explore, but we found that on Google. The Smithy is nice and clean, fresh towels and linen but could do with more towels if staying a week like we did. Parking is quite tight, a very narrow drive that our car didn’t fit in so we hung over the boundary gate slightly as had 2 cars. I think ‘ample’ parking is apt for a mini or other small family car and you could probably get 2 maybe even 3 cars on at a squeeze. The outbuilding was secured and didn’t bother us. Peaceful, lovely big lawned garden my kids loved. Functional kitchen, good sized utility room with washing machine and dryer. 5 minutes Walk to The Fox pub but you need to book a table for dinner as gets booked up. Please note, these things didn’t put us off and are just open feedback that can be rectified. Cosy house, welcoming and traditional and steeped in history.
