This village of Ballater features a neat village green, specialist shops, charming tea rooms and granite cottages, all adding to its gentle ambience. The River Dee flows through Ballater and is well-renowned for its salmon fishing during the fishing season. Royal Deeside is so-called because of its connection to the Royal Family, who have frequently visited the town since the time of Queen Victoria.
We’ve been visiting Ballater since the late 1990’s and used to stay in a lodge that was owned by my in-laws at the nearby Hilton Craigendarroch. They sold that in 2015. Wanting to come back we found Westwood and am very glad we did. Being in the heart of the village is so much better and everything is within a couple of minutes walk. The cottage was spotless and has been beautifully renovated. Big plus is the off street parking as the roads are quite narrow in parts of Ballater. If your visiting this part of Aberdeenshire, I’d highly recommend Westwood.
My partner and I have just returned from a long weekend break in Ballater staying in Westwood. Westwood is a beautifully finished cottage set right in the heart of Ballater. There is off street parking and we did not need to move the car from the driveway at all during the weekend. The cottage itself is freshly decorated with an open plan layout. Downstairs is large with the lounge, kitchen and dining space open plan. The kitchen is appeared newly installed and has all the facilities you would need. Upstairs are two large bedrooms with great storage and a very modern bathroom. Towels are provided. The rear garden is fully enclosed so great for children or dogs. The owners should be credited for creating such a wonderful home from home. Locally we enjoyed many walks, a Chinese takeaway, Indian and got takeaway pizzas from the Alexandra Hotel just at the end of the road. On each night we also drank in the Deeside Inn which was warm and welcoming. We would also highly recommend the Bothy and Rock Salt has Snails where we had lunches. Rock Salt and Snails is again, just at the end of the road; a lovely café with great food. We will certainly return to Ballater and to Westwood.
