Just 2.5 miles away are the cobbled streets of Ulverston with independent shops and eateries, as well as the Laurel and Hardy Museum that commemorates Stan Laurel s birthplace. Travel 10 miles to Coniston Water or 17 miles to Lake Windermere, where you can hire bikes or boats to appreciate the scenery. Between the lakes lies Hawkshead, which features Wordsworth s schoolboy signature, while nearby Hill Top showcases where Beatrix Potter created many of her best loved characters.
