Winscombe is a large village in North Somerset and makes a superb base for exploring the surrounding countryside and coastline. The village is located in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is well-served by a selection of shops and cafes. Head to the coast and discover Burnham-on-Sea with its seven miles of unspoilt sandy beaches, sailing, fishing and donkey rides, as well as Burnham and Barrow Championship Golf Course. The nearby traditional seaside town of Weston-super-Mare offers awarding-winning sandy beaches, restaurants and shops, as well as the Playhouse, Winter Gardens and the Grand Pier offering a year-round programme of shows, musicals and fairs. Drive five miles inland to Cheddar, on the edge of the Mendip Hills and renowned for Cheddar Gorge, the largest gorge in Britain, which includes several show caves such as Gough’s Cave, through which Britain’s biggest underground river runs.
