Whittingham itself is a quiet village with a beautiful Saxon church, yet only a short drive from the market towns of Alnwick, Rothbury & Wooler, with lots to interest all tastes. Alnwick is host to the world famous Barter Books, Alnwick Gardens & dramatic castle which Harry Potter fans will love. Walkers and cyclist will be sure to fall in love with this wonderful scenic area of Northumberland. Enjoy a walk or picnic in the breathtaking Ingram Valley or take a walk in Alwinton, the gateway to the most remote part of the Coquet Valley. A little further north is the Harthope Valley with its dramatic crags and stunning scenery. The National Trust property of Cragside was the first home to be lit by hydroelectricity, and the elegant house and its grounds make for a great day out, and only 10 minutes drive away. Much of coastline is designated as An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is only a half hour drive away from the property. If its history you are after, then the many castles that dot the coastline, plus the accessibility to Hadrian's Wall will give you lots of chance to absorb it. There is a wealth of opportunities for boat trips, seal swims, kayaking, surfing and exploring the small coastal villages with their inns, tearooms & local produce. There is a trout fishery 2.5 miles away. 8 The Croft provides an excellent base for exploring both the unspoilt countryside along with the wonderful coastline. Beach 13 miles.
