The ancient village of Cowling sits across a hillside in the Pennine Hills, just seven miles from Skipton. A thriving village of stone-built, terraced houses set alongside the mills of a bygone age. The nearby Quaker village of Lothersdale was, at one time, home to Charlotte Bronte who modelled Gateshead Hall in Jane Eyre on Stone Gappe House, where she was governess. Today many visitors passing through the village are walkers, on the Pennine Way, on the stretch from Cowling to Gargrave. Skipton, known as 'The Gateway to the Dales' is nearby with much to interest visitors, with an ancient castle, a parish church and a colourful market on the high street
