The historic market town of Skipton is close at hand, boasting one of England’s best preserved Norman castles. Take a leisurely boat trip along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, step back in time with a narrated ghost walk around the town’s backwaters, or hunt for a bargain at the bustling street market – its stalls laden with local produce. An alternative selection of shops and tearooms can be found in Settle (6 miles), an ideal base for embarking on a journey aboard the famous Settle to Carlisle Railway. Set on the banks of the River Wharfe, the ruined priory of Bolton Abbey offers a picturesque setting for picnics and strolls along the river bank, and serves as a good starting point for more challenging hikes through forest and heath.
