Situated in the Northumberland National Park in the pretty village of Harbottle, this comfortable 4* holiday cottage offers a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. The cottage is situated in an International Dark Sky Park and has been accredited as ’Dark Sky Friendly’’ by VisitNorthumberland; the owners’ kindly supply a beginners stargazing kit that includes books and binoculars, so guests can enjoy a star-studded show! The small village pub (which has a small shop, pizzeria and information point), castle ruins and river are only a short walk from the cottage, and cycle routes ‘Pennine Cycleway’ and ‘Sandstone Way’ pass the front door. The Drake Stone is visible from the cottage and is an enjoyable walk up from its forest base, with great views of the village and a hidden lake behind it. There are another two pubs in nearby Alwinton 1½ miles away, which serve food. The traditional market town of Rothbury is 15 minutes away with a wide range of amenities, and the impressive Heritage Coast is about 30 minutes away where you will find miles of sandy beaches, castles and fishing villages. Kielder Water is about an hour away, home of the largest man-made lake in Northern Europe and England’s biggest working forest. Here you can cycle along the shore or on mountain bike trails, walk in the forest or participate in water sports. There is also a public astronomical observatory at Kielder, which is often described as ’out of this world’. The World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, including its forts and museums are all less than an hour’s drive away and well worth a visit. Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland (and famous from the Harry Potter films), is about a 40 minute drive away. The castle gardens and tree house restaurant are very impressive. Drakestone Cottage is a lovely spot from which to explore the delights of this award winning, unspoilt and friendly county. Shop, pub and restaurant 220 yards.
