From the cottage it’s just less than 2 miles to the wonderful beach at Sandsend, offering some fantastic walks along the cliff tops which form part of the Cleveland Way. Whitby is popular throughout the year with its cobbled streets and 199 steps leading up to the abbey, which was the inspiration for the author of the Dracula books, and where you can enjoy the view along the coastline to Robin Hood’s Bay. The town centre has an array of bars, restaurants and local pubs, and is still a very busy fishing harbour. For those of you who enjoy walking, the Cinder Track runs for over 20 miles from Whitby to Scarborough. This used to be the old railway track and is used by many walkers and cyclists. From Whitby you can catch the steam train on the North York Moors Railway, which takes you to Goathland, the fictional village of Aidensfield in the ever-popular TV programme, Heartbeat. Staying on the train will take you to the market town of Pickering. Beach 2 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
