Magical and truly unique Closeburn Castle is what is called a square stone ’keep’, a Norman construction style introduced in the time of William the Conqueror. Before then there were no castles in Britain, so Closeburn Castle is among the earliest examples of British castle construction. Built around 1232 by members of the Kirkpatrick family, the castle is steeped in history and oozes traditional charm and will certainly excite all the family. Settle in and enjoy this magnificent castle with its spiralling staircases and magnificent views. As part of your accommodation the owners will give you a guided tour around the property, where you will see the dungeons and you can walk around the battlements (a restricted area). The building was practically impenetrable, standing on a promontory and surrounded by a wooden palisade first and a stone wall later, with a drawbridge, and a lake called Closeburn Loch to protect it from invaders. For centuries the only way to access the first floor, roughly 10 feet above ground, was by ladder. During the years the castle has changed and adapted to modern times, and nowadays you won´t need to climb up a ladder to access the tower, as there are stairs that were built in 1748 by Sir Thomas Kirkpatrick. On the first floor you´ll find the kitchenette, small yet perfectly formed with all the modern appliances you might need for your holidays (and if there´s anything you miss just ask for it). The dining hall and drawing room are on the first floor too. Spend some time looking out for the owner’s cheeky animals through the windows or finding constellations in the night sky. On the second floor are two twin bedrooms with en-suite facilities. O´Donnell´s room, decorated with general O´Donnell family pictures. He was a descendant of the famous Irish warman ’The Red O´Donnell’ and he married Doña Victoria Kirkpatrick in Spain. Empress Eugenia’s room is decorated with motifs depicting the life of Napoleon III and his wife, Eugenia Palafox-Portocarreño y Kirkpatrick. On the third floor is the Kirkpatrick Suite, a magnificent double bedroom with en-suite facilities and a sitting area where you can sit and relax looking out the windows and listening to nature. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles. Free WiFi
