Discover the lively waters that meet at picturesque Loch Trool on scenic trails beneath the mighty Merrick. This area’s history is also written into the landscape - look out for Bruce’s Stone overlooking the site of the Battle of Glen Trool, and a moving monument to 17th-century covenanters who were slain for their religious beliefs. With five of the 7Stanes in Dumfries and Galloway, the world-class mountain biking centres have award-winning trails offering some of the best mountain biking in the country, and attract riders from all over the UK and beyond. You don’t have to be an experienced mountain biker to enjoy these famous trails since there is a wide range of routes to suit beginners, families and experts. Many of the centres also have skills areas for you to practise your technique. The Forest Park is a great place to watch wildlife. See the wide variety of woodland birds that visit the feeders or flutter in the canopy overhead, including great tits, goldcrests and crossbills. Red squirrels and roe deer are also regular visitors to the woods around the centre, especially early in the morning and at twilight. Newton Stewart is only a mile away and offers plentiful shops, bars and restaurants. The towns of Kirkcudbright, the artists’ town; Castle Douglas, the food town; and Gatehouse of Fleet, with its famed Cardoness Castle, are all worth a visit.
