Bluebell House is a historic building in the village of Helmsdale. Almost 200 years old, it is believed to have housed the village police station’s stables in the early to late 19th century. Seeing its situation on the corner of Sutherland Street and the road that follows the River Helmsdale up the Strath of Kildonan, and it’s easy to visualise it servicing the constabulary- it’s a strategic spot. The cottage is semi-detached, surrounded by other characterful properties, and a real rarity is that it has a mature and spacious garden, which may well have originally been the police yard because the stable block is at the end of the garden. The view of the surrounding hills from the garden and the property are wonderful. Just off the North Coast 500, it makes an ideal stop-over for three or four nights, but really a week would be best due to there being so much to see and do in the near and wider area. John O’ Groats and the Orkney Islands are within easy reach from Helmsdale, and the road through the Strath of Kildonan is a brilliant way to reach to north coast of Scotland and tick off places along the North Coast 500. There are many characterful coastal villages neighbouring Helmsdale, with Brora, Golspie, Dunbeath and Dornoch being highlights. However, Helmsdale itself is a gem of a place. It sits on the coast and has a pretty little harbour with a small fishing fleet bringing in lobsters and crabs. A highlight of a stay here is simply sitting on the harbour wall watching the boats come and go, and even spotting salmon pass by en route to the River Helmsdale. Finish off the day by popping into one of the pubs for a chat, drink and a meal of local venison, salmon, lobster or crab. The village is at the mouth of the Helmsdale River, which is one of the most productive salmon rivers in the whole of Scotland. The Prince of Wales often visits to fly fish the Helmsdale. Most of the river is managed by estates up the valley and they all have very long waiting lists to gain access to beats. However, when the salmon and trout season opens on the 11th January, there is an Open Day Ceremony during which anyone can fish any of the Helmsdale for free for a day. People travel from far and wide to get the opportunity. Thankfully though, if you miss this open day in the depths of winter, there is an Association Water covering 1½ miles up river that anyone can fish. Permits are available in the village. There is also trout fishing on the three lochs of the Badenloch Estate, very reasonably priced, again enquire locally. If golf is more your thing, there is a characterful, wee 9-hole course in Helmsdale, worth a go during your holiday. But a little further afield there are outstanding links golf courses to be played, and they’re a fraction of the price of more southerly courses in Aberdeenshire and Fife. Brora, Golspie, Wick and Reay are brilliant links courses. With all the sight-seeing, fishing and golfing, it is easy to see why a short break isn’t enough at Bluebell Cottage. With its comfortable accommodation, you should stay for longer and use the cottage as your base for Highland adventures. Beach 1 mile. Shop and restaurant 200 yards, pub 400 yards.
