Situated opposite is Nethergate Brewery, which brews award-winning, flavoursome beer and has a large outside seating area with plenty of tables, it also serves local wine and gin. Also close by is Long Melford Country Park, a perfect place to unwind with its small lakes, wooded areas, and viewing points beside the River Stour. Long Melford is without doubt one of Suffolk’s most attractive places to visit and has been voted as one of Suffolk’s most desirable villages. As the name implies, the village has a very long high street filled with medieval buildings, a plethora of antique shops, tea rooms, restaurants and boutiques. It also has some fabulous art galleries which specialise in contemporary fine art, furniture and glass. Well worth a visit is Melford Hall, owned by the National Trust, once visited by Queen Elizabeth I and holds connections to the children’s author Beatrix Potter. The beautiful, medieval Holy Trinity Church stands at the top of the great green, built in the 15th century at a time of growing prosperity among the local cloth and wool merchants. Places to visit include the market towns of Bury St Edmunds, a 25-minute drive, Hadleigh, a 22-minute drive, Lavenham, a 12-minute drive, and Sudbury, a 6-minute drive, which also has rail links to London and Newmarket. The famous university city of Cambridge is an hours’ drive away. For fun at the coast and an excellent sandy beach is Brightlingsea.
