Sheena's But'n'Ben in Kyle of Lochalsh

The location at the road end near to the headwater of Loch Hourn is almost other worldly. Right by the sea loch with amazing views, it’s frankly a bit of a paradise.

Sheena’s But’n’Ben is as far as you can drive up the shore of Loch Hourn, an amazing sea loch that separates the peninsulas of Glenelg and Knoydart. The journey to Sheena’s But’n’Ben is almost as good as being at the cottage. Leaving the main road at Shiel Bridge after passing through atmospheric Glen Shiel, you take an old military road to Glenelg, which has a fabulous inn on the water, and the old turntable ferry across the narrows to Skye. The road continues, and dramatically rolls along the coast before turning west to follow the shoreline of Loch Hourn. You pass the Sandaig Islands where Gavin Maxwell and his otters lived, and your view changes from the Sound of Sleat and the Cuillin of Skye to the vast wilderness of Knoydart with its four Munros. Charming Arnisdale is reached, and a little further on picturesque Corran and right at the end of the road you’ll find Sheena’s But’n’Ben next to local favourite Sheena’s Tea Hut! It’s a magical spot and one you’ll fall for. So many have done so before you. But’n’Ben for those that don’t know is a Scots term for a two-roomed cottage, which this property would’ve been originally. Thankfully it has a few more rooms today, and Sheena’s Butn’Ben offers a great level of accommodation for six people. There are three bedrooms: a double, twin and bunk room. The living room is spacious and has an open fire. The kitchen/dining room is a good space for everyone to convene for hearty meals after long days out exploring the area. There’s so much exploring to do in this part of the world. You could leave the car outside the cottage all week and go on a different walk every day of your holiday. There are countless options for hillwalking - it’s a hikers dream destination! A favourite local walk goes straight from Sheena’s But’n’Ben, and Walk Highlands describe it as going through some of Scotland’s finest scenery. It follows the Old Coast Path which was built and used back in the 18th and 19th centuries for the Highlands herring industry. Further afield, Glenelg, Skye, Eilean Donan Castle, Lochcarron and further on along the NC500 are all worth exploring. But to return to Corran, and be surrounded by such awe-inspiring landscapes will most likely keep you from straying too far. It’s a magical spot. Free WiFi
